Postdoctoral Fellowship in Asia Research Institute (Science, Technology and Society Research Cluster)

The Asia Research Institute invites outstanding, active researchers from around the world to work on an important piece of Asia-centred research in the social sciences or humanities.

Apart from the quality of the research proposal, and the applicant’s publication track record, positions will be awarded on the basis of the relationship of their research topic to the identified priorities and themes of the cluster.

The Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Cluster concentrates on the relationship between those three domains in and beyond Asian settings, and their intersections with the environment in the past, present and future.

The cluster currently brings together a diverse, interdisciplinary group of researchers who work on the following research themes:

i) climate change and carbon governance;

ii) planetary health and ‘Asian medicines’;

iii) energy transitions, infrastructure and space;

iv) critical minerals.

The cluster welcomes diversity in methodological approaches, fosters interdisciplinary practices and encourages collaborative research projects. In the current round of recruitment, we are particularly interested in hiring a postdoctoral research fellow with research interests at the intersection of STS and environmental humanities.

Given that a growing proportion of ARI’s funding is derived from external sources, strong preference will be given to candidates with potential to contribute to building competitive research grant applications.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Researcher will work under the supervision of the Cluster Leader and take the lead in duties such as organising workshops and conferences, participating in current cluster projects, and carrying out new projects (including applying for grant funding). Administrative duties and committee work will be assigned and form part of the position.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

1. Candidates must have fulfilled all requirements of securing a PhD from a reputable university at the time they take up their appointment at ARI.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore seeks to appoint an Associate Professor in Environmental Data Science to be held jointly in both the Asian School of the Environment (ASE) and the newly established College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS). We are particularly keen to recruit applicants whose research includes quantitative analysis of geoscience, climatologically or environmentally relevant observational data. The candidate is expected to lead and conduct high-impact research at the intersection of environmental and Earth system science and data science. We seek candidates who can develop and implement novel data science methodologies, which might include AI and machine learning, deep learning, and data analytics, to analyse environmental and/or Earth observational datasets, model complex environmental systems, and extract actionable insights.

The faculty member will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in environment and/or Earth system science, data science and related disciplines, incorporating innovative teaching methods and real-world applications of data science in environmental contexts and supervise graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, providing mentorship and guidance in research design, interpretation, and professional development.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Earth system science, Environmental science, Computer science, Mathematics, Theoretical Physics or a related field and demonstrated expertise in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science, with a strong track record of research publications and external funding. The Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) cluster at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) seeks applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position specialising in the philosophy of science and technology. Appointments will be made on an initial three-year contract with the possibility of renewal.

We are particularly interested in applicants who can play an instrumental role in addressing questions relating to ethics in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies—both through teaching students who are pursuing engineering, computer science, and architecture majors and through interdisciplinary research collaborations with engineering, design, and computer science faculty.
