DesCartes Program (work package 9) is looking for research assistant in UI/UX design and library development. The objective is to develop a user interface and implement libraries as required for the DesCartes Builder, a novel open-source framework for designing, validating, and integrating innovative hybrid AI models and methodologies.

DESCARTES PROGRAM

The DesCartes programme is developing a hybrid AI, combining Learning, Knowledge and Reasoning, which has good properties (need for less resources and data, security, robustness, fairness, respect for privacy, ethics), and demonstrated on industrial applications of the smart city (digital energy, monitoring of structures, air traffic control).

The program brings together 80 permanent researchers (half from France, half from Singapore), with the support of large industrial groups (Thales SG, EDF SG, ESI group, CETIM Matcor, ARIA etc.).

The research will take place mainly in Singapore, at the premises of CNRS@CREATE, with a competitive salary and generous funding for missions.

DESCRIPTION

To facilitate the development of the next generation of urban systems, the DesCartes Program is currently developing a software framework that brings together AI components, physics models and data, modelization and control aspects. This framework, the DesCartes Builder, shall play an integral role in developing robust hybrid AI pipelines, as required for the design and deployment of digital twins of urban applications. As a research assistant, you will play a key role in developing the Builder:

• Craft a user-friendly interface:Design an intuitive interface that allows users to define, manipulate and execute the hybrid AI pipelines with flexibility and ease.
• Develop reusable components: Create robust and reusable libraries that will form the foundation of the DesCartes Builder framework.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum Requirements Bachelor or Master in computer science or engineering.
  A first relevant professional experience (master, internships…).
• Required Skills: Rigor, ability to work with autonomy and with a results-oriented mindset.
  Good interpersonal and communication skill; teamwork.
  Knowledge of Python and basics of machine learning
  Basics of UI/UX design
• Preferred Skills: Strong software engineering skills and development methodologies
  Experience with UI/UX design and UI libraries such as Qt,
  Knowledge of C++ & software optimization,
  Experience with Linux development environment (bash, make, etc.),
  Familiarity with machine learning and deep learning libraries (PyTorch, scikit-learn, etc.).

As a Product Designer, you will play a critical role in creating 3D wearable prototypes. You will lead design projects from concept to completion, creating product prototypes in close collaboration with the project manager. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of design principles, and best practices, materials, and manufacturing techniques, with a passion for creating unique products.

Key Responsibilities

• Create and define a 3D wearable product based on specific requirements.
• Conduct user research, analyzing user feedback and usage data to identify key opportunities for product enhancement and innovation.
• Responsible for digitally visualizing design concepts and user interactions and/or creating 3D mock-ups and prototypes via renderings.
• Prepare technical drawings and specifications for production and communicate with manufacturers and suppliers for product execution.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor of Fine Art or Bachelor Degree in product design, demonstrating a track record of delivering impactful physical products or features from concept to launch, or graduates with a focus on product design skills.
• Exceptional visual design skills with a proven track record.
• Proficiency in prototyping tools to effectively demonstrate design concepts and user interactions.
• Experience in conducting user research and translating research insights into product features that had a proven impact
• Strong communication skills and independence.

The Institute for Applied Learning Sciences and Educational Technology (ALSET) (to be renamed Centre for Holistic Inquiry into Lifelong Learning (CHILL)) has an opening for a UI/UX Researcher (Research Assistant) role.

The User Researcher will utilize data analytics to understand and analyze the needs, behaviours, and motivations of users to inform the design and development of a system for designing inclusive blended learning solutions for diverse learner populations. This involves:

• Gathering raw data from various sources such as databases, data warehouses, social media, and more.
• Preparing the data for analysis by removing inaccuracies, inconsistencies, and redundancies.
• Applying statistical and mathematical models to the data to identify relationships, correlations, and causations.
• Conducting various research activities such as interviews, surveys, and focus groups to gather both qualitative and quantitative data from users.
• Synthesizing qualitative data through thematic analysis and interpreting quantitative data using statistical methods.
• Creating visualizations to interpret and communicate findings from collected data.
• Translating research findings into actionable insights and recommendations, guiding the design and development process to ensure the final product meets user needs effectively.

Additionally, the researcher will work in the broader field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) on researching user experience where they would be developing, prototyping and conducting usability testing. The Designer will also be involved in developing various artefacts contributing to the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) aspect of HCI research, and leading appropriate research activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems or related fields.
• At least 1-2 years’ experience in user research and data analytics using technologies such as Tableau, R and Python.
• Experience in databases such as MongoDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL is preferred.
• Experience in technologies such as React, Node is an added plus.
• Prior research experience is advantageous.
• Strong analytical skills and proficiency in data analytics tools.
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
