The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is looking for an ambitious, highly motivated Research Fellow (post-doctoral scholar). The appointed candidate will jointly develop and apply physics-​based computational simulations to characterize and understand earthquakes physics and large-​scale tectonic processes in the Southeast Asian Ring of Fire. The selected candidate will join the Computational Geophysics Lab at EOS and work under the supervision of Asst Prof. Luca Dal Zilio and will be part of the "Integrating Volcano and Earthquake Science and Technology (InVEST) in Southeast Asia" project, a 5-year project that aims to provide a holistic understanding of regional tectonics, volcanoes, the linkages between the two, and their cascading hazards and impacts in Singapore and Southeast Asia. The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is a research institute at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore. Its mission is to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, toward safer and more sustainable societies. The Centre for Geohazard Observations (CGO) of EOS provides technical and research support to the observatory. It installs, maintain and manages the observatory’s geophysical and other field instrumentation stations spread over several countries in the region.

The Senior Research Engineer is to enable the research conducted by EOS by providing effective technical and technological solutions in installing, maintaining and managing the various geohazard observation stations, and conducting field surveys. The purpose is to measure and collect quality field data necessary for the tectonic, volcanic and climate related research of the observatory.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, install and maintain geohazard observation stations and networks in and round Southeast Asia that collect geophysical, geodetic and geochemical data for research. Project Title: Developing a preliminary learning progression model in historical understanding through an investigation of the ways knowledge about the past is understood by lower secondary students in Singapore.

Project Introduction: This project focuses on developing a preliminary progression model of students’ ideas and understandings about the nature and status of historical knowledge. It explores how lower secondary students in Singapore view and make sense of knowledge about the past they encounter when learning the national history and examines how their ideas can be mapped across a progression, i.e., from naive to more sophisticated states of understanding. Consequently, the study will seek to establish an empirical basis from which pedagogical and practical considerations could be made on ways to improve the teaching and learning of Singapore history to 13 and 14-year-old students, particularly with progression in students’ ideas and understanding in mind.

Requirements:

• A good Undergraduate or Master degree in history and/or history education;
• Attained formal certification as a qualified history teacher (e.g., Postgraduate Diploma in Education);
• At least 3 years of experience teaching history in a secondary school (applicants with additional experience in curriculum planning and resource development will be preferred);
• Familiarity with educational research and has reasonably deep knowledge of topics related to history education research (especially in student cognition and thinking in history);
• Published at least one journal article on a topic in history education research and has presented at local and/or international conferences;

Responsibilities:

The Centre for Geohazard Observations (CGO) of EOS provides technical and research support to the observatory. • Design, install and maintain geohazard observation stations and networks in and round Southeast Asia that collect geophysical, geodetic and geochemical data for research.
