Core Requirements of the Post
In fulfilling the requirements of the post, the Science Laboratory Technician will aspire to the highest standards of professionalism and will, in particular:
â–ª Schedule the availability of, prepare and provide apparatus, equipment and other teaching materials as requested by the Science Teachers in the Faculty. These may include chemicals, biological material, equipment, models, and disposable material such as stationery.
â–ª Collect and clear away equipment and chemicals, and other teaching material once it is finished with, including safely disposing of waste and washing-up apparatus (using the dishwasher, where appropriate)
â–ª Check for faulty and damaged equipment after each lesson, report to the Science Teacher and or Head of Faculty (as appropriate), and repair or replace the equipment, if possible.
Areas of Responsibility and Key Tasks Technological and Resource Management
The Science Laboratory Technician will:
▪ Operate an up to date, efficient, remotely accessible, online system of monitoring the storage of chemicals, equipment and materials used in the laboratories.
â–ª Monitor breakages of equipment and ensure that active inventory levels are maintained.
▪ Assist in updating record of inventory levels and locations of backup equipment, such that end of year ordering is efficient.
â–ª Assist in annual, final, stock check of all chemicals, disposable materials, glassware and other apparatus, so that new materials may be ordered.
â–ª Adhere to NAE and IGCSE/IBO/CIS/WASC specifications and requirements
â–ª Keep storage areas clean and well organised
â–ª Clean all equipment including special equipment and glassware needing special care or treatment.
â–ª Ensure the safe storage, care and handling of chemicals, safe disposal of residues and wastes, including micro-organisms.
â–ª Unpack and check orders within one week of delivery. Inform HoF if any equipment is faulty or materials are missing, and follow up as directed.
â–ª Review equipment needs within the department and advise on purchase of new and replacement of equipment. Order materials as requested
Safety and Risk Assessing (ensuring that we all are aware of safety issues)
The Science Laboratory Technician will:
â–ª Have a complete CLEAPSS Hazcards reference for all chemicals in the prep room
â–ª Ensure written Science Laboratory Technician specific Risk Assessments are in place for all equipment, apparatus and materials (as necessary) prior to their use, and writing and preparing the risk assessments as necessary.
â–ª Provide CLEAPSS Hazcards every time a chemical is used in class
â–ª Comply with all Health and Safety standards and regulations issued by Stamford and external agencies including NAE, IGCSE, IBO, CIS, and WASC
â–ª Main First-aider within the faculty (Training will be provided).
Technical Support (assisting others to plan for use and use equipment)
The Science Laboratory Technician will:
â–ª Assist teachers, as requested, to facilitate student learning with respect to specific outcomes
▪ Advise staff and visiting teachers about resources and equipment available.
â–ª Advise teachers of laboratory activities that may support targeted learning outcomes.
Professional Responsibilities
The Science Laboratory Technician will:
â–ª Support the life of the school beyond the classroom;
â–ª Lead one or more after co-curricular activities;
â–ª Participate in residential weeks and other trips;
â–ª Contribute to whole school learning initiatives during term.
Preparation of practical materials for classes
The Science Laboratory Technician will:
â–ª The system in place shall allow the laboratory technician ample time to prepare the materials required for a class. If special consumable purchases need to be made, teachers should allow a week, or arrange purchases themselves.
â–ª Teachers can expect labs to be prepared on time if two days notice is given. Labs will be cleaned from classrooms on the day that they are noted as completed.
▪ It is not the lab technicianʼs responsibility to plan lab activities for classes. Lab activities should be planned as an integral part of a unit and designed to achieve specific learning outcomes.

▪ Able to work with students and staff in secondary school.
â–ª Up-to-date with the latest trends, technologies, and techniques in your specific skill base.
▪ Ability to solve problems creatively and efficiently.
â–ª Able to assist students as needed both academically and during practical procedures
â–ª Able to care for the wellbeing of small aquatic animals (fish and terrapin)
â–ª Able to support enrichment activities such as field trips and after school programmes (Trips may occasionally go outside of school hours).

- Hold a current Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure or equivalent for countries lived in outside of the UK.
- Compliance with visa requirements for working in Singapore.
