The Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is recruiting a Research Assistant/Associate Policy Analyst. The rapid population ageing in Singapore calls for innovative solutions. We aim to assess the impact of health promotion programmes (e.g. urban care farming, cognition training, etc) on the health and health-related behaviours of participants. This project will involve recruitment, assessment, and analysis of the research data. The candidate will also be working on models in policy evaluation. This is a full-time position based in Singapore.

Duties may include but are not limited to: (1) provide programming support to a research project (2) assist with recruitment and data analyses; (3) manage large complex databases; (4) conduct literature reviews (5) contribute to the development of scientific papers and the dissemination of the study findings.

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Research Assistant to support pioneering research in molecular microbial ecology and infectious disease evolution under the guidance of A/Prof Yann Boucher at the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) – NTU. This position will focus on the ecology, evolution, and genomics of enteric bacterial pathogens, with an emphasis on understanding pathogen life cycles, adaptation, and survival in human and environmental reservoirs. The successful candidate will contribute to advancing culturomics approaches to the study of microbiomes and support the discovery of new bacterial species related to key pathogens such as Vibrio cholerae. This role will suit an individual passionate about microbiology, pathogen ecology, and experimental evolution.

Job Description

• Conduct laboratory-based research on the microbial ecology and evolution of enteric pathogens, with a focus on pathogen life cycles, antimicrobial resistance acquisition, and virulence factors.
• Assist in the isolation, characterization, and genomic analysis of bacterial species associated with the “cholerae clade” and other enteric pathogens.
• Support culturomics studies to examine microbial transmission dynamics between human and environmental systems.
• Collaborate with team members on experiments that investigate pathogen evolution over human timescales, particularly in response to environmental pressures and host interactions.
• Maintain detailed and accurate records of experiments, data collection, and data analysis using relevant software.
• Prepare research findings for publications, reports, and presentations, contributing to collaborative international projects.
• Daily lab management tasks such as inventory of supplies and samples, preparing culture media and solutions, autoclaving materials, ordering supplies and maintaining bacterial cultures and stocks

Requirements

• At least Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Epidemiology, or a related field.
• Prior experience in laboratory research, microbial ecology, or molecular genetics preferred.
• Proficiency in molecular techniques such as PCR, DNA extraction, sequencing, and bioinformatics software for genomic analysis.
• Strong data analysis skills and familiarity with microbial ecology or evolutionary biology concepts.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, able to prepare clear research documentation and contribute to team discussions.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

General Description:

Job Description:

• Perform all assigned warehouse tasks through safe, efficient, cost effective and accurate handling of customer products and materials using manual labour and equipment including forklift, reach truck and pallet jack
• Track and monitor inbound and outbound container status; and plan and coordinate loading and unloading of goods
• Timely loading and unloading of goods; and take photos of the unstuffing process to verify if there are damaged and/or discrepancy of goods received
• After unstuffing, check and take photos of the containers to ensure that the containers are externally sound and undamaged
• Submit the photos taken during and after the unstuffing process to the customer service department before returning the containers to depot appointed by the carriers to avoid disputes concerning the condition of returned containers as well as discrepancy in goods received
• Ensure prompt reporting of any suspected or apparent damage of containers and missing and/or damaged goods to the immediate supervisor
• Responsible for moving, sorting, labelling, repacking, stacking and storage control of goods
• Accurately locate and pick, both by hand and by using appropriate equipment including forklift and reach truck, from pallets, racks and shelves and the staging area
• Packing and/re-packing goods according customer specifications
• Release cargo for deliveries and self collections by customers
• Manage returned goods and conduct investigation on causes of returns; and provide feedback to team lead for recommendation of solutions

The Job
