Job Description

The Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is seeking a research fellow (RF) for the various projects on chronic disease. The successful applicant will have a strong foundation in epidemiology and quantitative methods, show good initiative in troubleshooting tasks and have excellent communication skills.

The RF will play an important role in the conduct of current research projects on diabetes epidemiology, care and outcomes. In addition, successful candidates will be expected to support the preparation of new grant proposals. The RF will also be expected to work independently, while working in a team-based setting.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct and coordinate clinical or epidemiologic research under the direction and supervision of the Principal Investigator and Collaborators, including preparing applications for ethical approval, data collection and management, and quality assurance
• Manage these research projects in a team-based, cross functional research environment, which include supervising/ mentoring junior research staff and research students
• Undertake necessary statistical analysis, including advanced modelling techniques, to interrogate the data

The Institute aims to address current and emerging health challenges across Asia. The Planetary Health Initiative is SDGHI’s newest strategic initiative. Planetary health pertains to the integrated state of health of both people and the planet. It recognizes that people’s health is now greatly shaped by human-driven global environmental change, such as climate change, environmental pollution, rapid urbanisation, biodiversity loss, among others. Addressing these interlocking challenges requires concerted actions within and beyond the health sector, spanning diverse disciplines and nations.

During the Initiative’s inaugural phase, the Institute will focus on launching new educational and capacity-building activities, conducting landscape analysis of the current state of play especially at the regional level, exploring research collaborations with other planetary health-oriented groups within Singapore and beyond, and implementing policy influencing and advocacy activities – all geared towards positioning the Institute as an emerging thought leader in planetary health in Asia and beyond.

The Research Fellow will be part of the Initiative’s inaugural team and will significantly contribute to the early development of the Institute’s planetary health portfolio. The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities which include planning, organising, and conducting research studies, including but not limited to the following:

• Independently carry out the design and execution of research projects.
• Write and review research papers, present research outcomes, conceptualise new ideas and develop plans for independent research.
• Provide support for external grant/protocol development, study design, ethics review application, and other research management activities.

Job Requirements:

• PhD in relevant fields such as public health, health systems, sustainable development, social sciences, among others, AND/OR post-graduate medical degree.

Required Qualifications:

· Master’s Degree or above in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Information Security, or a related field.

· Hands-on experience in software development using languages such as Python, C/C++, Rust, or Go.

· Familiarity with communication protocols and security architectures.

Job Responsibilities

• Reporting to the Research Fellow in charge, under the supervision of Research Fellow and Principal Investigator (PI)
• Assist in literature review, IRB submission, coordinate recruitment, data collection in quantitative and qualitative studies, data entry and analysis.
• Liaise with the relevant personnel in hospital / Polyclinics to ensure smooth running of recruitment and data collection
• Be involved in subject recruitment, scheduling and data entry. Screen patients based on study eligibility, and communicate the study aims to potential subjects in layman terms.
• Obtain consent taking, administer study questionnaires and follow-up on study participants.
• Work closely with research team, clinicians, clinic staff and other relevant internal departments to ensure research study needs are met.
• Able to work on tight timelines, set sensible targets and achieve research deliverables.
• Conduct qualitative interviews and data analysis.
• Perform data cleaning and quantitative data analysis.
• Responsible for maintaining strict adherence to research protocols i.e., HBRA.

Requirements

• Master’s / Bachelor’s degree in Science/ Public Health/ Social Scienc
• Preferably with some experience in research
• Able to adapt in a fast-paced environment, with a strong focus to meet research deliverables and targets.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Leadership and accountability to tasks is very desirable.
• Able to work independently, as well as in a team.
• Meticulous, well-organized and able to multi-task
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment with different groups of stakeholders.
• Bilingual preferred (fluent in Mandarin/Malay/Tamil).
• Willing to travel between the Hospitals and external study sites as part of his / her work.
• Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines and the Human Biomedical Research Act (HBRA)

Software Proficiency (Either or all)

• Experience with Python libraries (Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, Seaborn)
• Experience with Natural Language Processing (NLP) Libraries (NLTK, spaCy, Gensim, TextBlob, VADER, Stanford NLP, Flair, Hugging Face Transformers)
• Knowledge of Machine Learning Algorithms (Understanding of supervised/unsupervised algorithms, experience with Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch)
• Understanding of Sentiment Analysis Techniques and Text Preprocessing
• Knowledge of lexicon-based and machine learning-based sentiment analysis approaches.
• Experience with other relevant Python libraries for sentiment analysis, such as Keras, XGBoost, and LightGBM.
• Familiarity with Text Mining Tools - Experience with text mining techniques and tools (RapidMiner, KNIME).
• Familiarity with Cloud Computing Platforms - Experience with AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure; containerization with Docker.
