The Asia Research Institute invites outstanding, active researchers from around the world to work on an important piece of Asia-centred research in the social sciences or humanities.

Apart from the quality of the research proposal, and the applicant’s publication track record, positions will be awarded on the basis of the relationship of their research topic to the identified priorities and themes of the cluster.

The Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Cluster concentrates on the relationship between those three domains in and beyond Asian settings, and their intersections with the environment in the past, present and future.

The cluster currently brings together a diverse, interdisciplinary group of researchers who work on the following research themes:

ii) planetary health and ‘Asian medicines’;

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Researcher will work under the supervision of the Cluster Leader and take the lead in duties such as organising workshops and conferences, participating in current cluster projects, and carrying out new projects (including applying for grant funding). 1) In the first, Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations of ammonia and methanol engines will be performed, leading to a better understanding of the pollutant-generation processes. 2) In the second, systems modelling of alternative fuels and application to real-world data from ship operations will be performed, to compare possible decarbonisation scenarios in view of realistic ship operations. The Choksi research group is seeking a Research Fellow funded by a grant through the C4T Phase 2 No Cost Extension hosted at the Energy Research Institute at NTU (ERIAN). The Research Fellow will help advance foundational knowledge in understanding the stability and synthesizability of porous materials using computational methods. The research fellow will employ electronic structure calculations, first principles thermodynamics, and machine learning methods to develop a paradigm for the predictive synthesizability of porous materials..

This appointment is until the end of the project, 31 October 2025.

Key Responsibilities:

• Performing ab initio calculations for heterogeneous catalysts
• Using ab initio thermodynamics to determine catalytic structures under working conditions
• Calculating reaction rates using microkinetic models.
• Understanding the stability of nanoparticle catalysts
• Working together with PhD students from Choksi’s group, and undergraduate researchers
• Writing papers and delivering technical presentations.

Job Requirements:

• PhD or equivalent in chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, material science or an allied field.
• Between 0-3 years of post-PhD work experience.
• Extensive experience in using quantum mechanical and molecular modelling packages like VASP and Quantum ESPRESSO, has advanced knowledge of first principles thermodynamics, and reaction kinetics modelling.

The job is for automated high-throughput experimentation and robotic development, running AI-driven automated worklows for thin film development, electrical and opto-electronic characterization as well as device applications. The RF will be responsible for building a fully automated robotic platform to execute the scientific goals laid out in the project, with multi-layer perovskite film deposition and crystallization, followed by rapid characterization to create a database (primarily building upon the SpinBot system we have purchased from SciPrios: https://www.sciprios.de/lab-automation/spincoating-robots/ ). The RF is also expected to execute optimization algorithms developed by the team to identify relevant regions of interest in the input parameter space. Python programming, database management and robotic interfacing (both with robots and electrical and mechanical equipment) is necessary for this job.

The work is critical in the goal of materials-by-design, especially considering sparse, yet well-labelled materials science datasets. The work performed here will continue to maintain NTU’s leadership in the space of AI for materials science, especially with digital discovery and data-driven learning being pioneering areas of research.

The Research Fellow is expected to work in the space of High-Throughput experimentation and automated robotics for synthesis, thin film deposition and electrical and opto-electronic characterization. Specifically, the RF is expected to work on the following areas of research:

• Building a self-driving lab with robots, spin-coater and/or doctor blade coating systems, integrated with sample transfer and electrical and opto-electronic characterization.
