Job Description

The Mechanobiology Institute (MBI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is a leading multi-disciplinary institute devoted to developing new paradigms for understanding biological functions in health and diseases from the perspective of cell, tissue and organ mechanics/dynamics and mechano-signal transduction. The institute operates on a fully integrated open-lab philosophy, with an extensive infrastructure supported by core facilities dedicated to technology such as state-of-the-art light microscopy, nano- and micro- fabrication, and computing.

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to join the Kanchanawong Lab's project studying the interplay between cell adhesion proteins and cell division. Using advanced microscopy and molecular manipulation techniques, this role offers an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research within an interdisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform and design experiments related to cell adhesion proteins and cell division
• Utilize advanced microscopy techniques to analyze biological processes
• Assist in laboratory management, including inventory, ordering, and general lab upkeep
• Collaborate closely with team members across disciplines to achieve research goals
• Contribute to manuscript preparation and publications

Required Qualifications

• A Master’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related field
• Proven research experience demonstrated by publications in relevant areas
• Proficiency in molecular and cell biology techniques such as molecular cloning, cell culture, and bioinformatic analysis
• Prior experience with laboratory management is highly desirable

The Hwei-Ee Tan lab studies the fundamental biological basis of “gut-feelings”, how bacteria in the gut signals to the host to influence physiology and behaviour. Using mice as a mammalian model, the lab investigates how diet and microbiome factors modulates host phenotypes (e.g. food reward, anxiety behaviours, etc). Besides supporting curiosity-driven basic research on the gut-brain axis, his lab is also studying the brain-gut axis, to uncover host-microbe interactions. His lab’s work is multidisciplinary, the research scope covers diverse skills from molecular biology to systems neuroscience, physiology and behaviour. With top-tier research support from National Research Foundation Singapore, Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (NARSAD), etc, his lab at NTU LKCMedicine is actively recruiting talented postdoctoral research fellows, research assistants, and interns, and also open to sponsoring motivated PhD/Masters students. Most of the world now live in cities. Liveable, sustainable and resilient cities are needed to face the looming challenges of climate change, the next pandemics, ageing populations and technological, social and economic disruptions such as what we are currently experiencing.

NUS Cities is a multi-disciplinary, open and inclusive collaborating platform comprising the following three pillars: education, research and advisory.

Education: Educate the next generation of students as well as current practitioners to take an urban systems approach to plan, govern, build and manage cities, using a strong case-based approach taught by both practitioners and academics.

Research: Taking a systems approach tacking some of our biggest urban challenges, and in the process, gradually developing a Science of Cities.

Advisory: Provide strategic advisory services to organisations and cities. NUS Cities will also partner other universities and research institutions locally and internationally, as well as with industry partners worldwide.

NUS Cities hence draws on the varied talent and expertise of the University in its colleges, faculties and departments and centres of excellence to drive research to better plan, manage, and govern, high-density, high-growth, sustainable, resilient, and liveable cities through an urban systems approach and systems thinking.

The full-time appointment for this Research Fellow position is for a contract period of 1 to 2 years with the possibility of renewal.

Responsibilities 

• Establish and manage large databases.
• Interpret and analyse data
• Generate reports and presentation of data to relevant stakeholders
• Generate conference presentations and papers for submission to peer reviewed journals
• Collaborate across teams, contributing to multiple research projects at once
• Work closely with research PIs to develop new research ideas and ensure the successful and timely completion of the project(s)
