Research Assistant/Associate, Analytical Chemistry

Our group is interested in understanding the roles of microbial lipids in human health and antimicrobial resistance. Malaria continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality associated with an infectious disease, accounting for 249 million malaria cases and 608,000 deaths in 2022 alone. The lab is interested in the understanding of the mechanisms of drug resistance associated with antimicrobials, including antimalarial drugs. The job entails deciphering the mechanisms of resistance to existing and newly identified antimalarials. The candidate will be required to work with human and simian malarial parasites, Plasmodium falciparum, P. cynomolgi and P. knowlesi and performed forward and reverse genetic experiments to better understand the mechanisms of drug resistance.

Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute, NTU is looking for a Research Fellow with expertise in heterogeneous catalysis to develop improved catalyst formulations for conversion of plastic waste into carbon nanotubes and hydrogen.

The project is funded by National Environment Agency, Singapore to address one of the largest problems in waste management – the problem of plastic waste pollution. A significant fraction of plastic waste has substandard quality for mechanical and chemical recycling even after sorting and cleaning. The Research Fellow will use pyrolysis-chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology for converting these plastic waste streams (specifically, contaminated and rejected plastics) into multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and hydrogen. The role of Research Fellow is to develop catalysts that will allow to reduce catalyst cost and increase carbon nanotubes yield to make the process more economically viable.

Key Responsibilities:

The candidate will be undertaking full research work and administrative duties during the term of employment within the following areas:

• Catalyst formulation and testing in pyrolysis-CVD process;
• Liaising with toll manufacturers regarding the feasibility of scaled up catalyst production.
• Cost-benefit analysis for the developed catalyst(s).
