Who are we looking for?

We are looking to fill research positions in maritime decarbonisation modelling:

1) In the first, Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations of ammonia and methanol engines will be performed, leading to a better understanding of the pollutant-generation processes. In addition to excelling in handling turbulent combustion theory Extensive, experience in combustion CFD is necessary.

2) In the second, systems modelling of alternative fuels and application to real-world data from ship operations will be performed, to compare possible decarbonisation scenarios in view of realistic ship operations. A thorough understanding of lifecycle analysis, energy system modelling, and Techno-economic analysis is needed. The ability to program in languages such as Python programming would be a plus.

What skills will you need?

All positions require a PhD or equivalent research experience in a combustion topic relevant to the above areas, strong motivation to work in a multi-national collaborative team, and extensive experience with report writing, journal publications, and presentations to academic and industrial settings. CARES is leading a new project “Sustainable Manufacture of Molecules and Materials (SM3)”, funded by NRF CREATE programme within the Decarbonisation Grand Challenge. The broad aim of the project is to develop novel approaches and technologies for fully de-fossilised routes to complex functional molecules and molecular materials. The project will explore novel chemical transformations for conversion of net-zero feedstocks to building blocks typically used in pharma, agrochem and other end applications. The project will also explore novel synthetic methods for conversion of the building blocks into end-use functional molecules. Who are we looking for?

The Gaunt group are looking for passionate and creative scientist to join our team as postdoctoral researchers in synthetic chemistry based in Cambridge Centre for Advanced Research and Education in Singapore, and closely integrated with the Gaunt group @ the University of Cambridge. Project Title: Examining the adaptability of Singapore Physical Education teachers: A case for the future of teaching

Project Introduction: Adaptability is the capacity to effectively react and respond in constructive ways to situations that can be characterized by change, novelty and uncertainty. In this programme of work, the tripartite model of adaptability will be used to examine Singapore Physical Education (PE) Teachers’ level of adaptability. The model involves cognitive, behavioural and emotional adaptability and refers to how an individual’s thinking, behaviour and emotions can be modified. In the context of PE teachers, the subject of PE is underpinned by a high level of variability and dynamism of the teaching environment as well as interaction among students and the PE teacher (e.g., physical classroom, CCA, outdoor education, values-based education). Unlike other subjects, the teaching and learning situation can transit quite quickly and there is greater uncertainty on the emergence of students’ learning behaviours as they interact with the learning task and environment.

In this programme of work, the research team would build on their previous research experiences and track records to i) examine how adaptable Singapore PE teachers are (Phase 1), ii) the factors that could impact the level of adaptability (e.g., perceived autonomy support, socio-demographic variables, resilience, and creativity) (Phase 1) and iii) if PE teachers with higher adaptability levels are more inclined to adopt innovative pedagogical practices (Phase 2).

The project:

In the context of the multi-partner project HYCOMBS (https://www.cares.cam.ac.uk/research/hycombs/), which is part of Singapore’s CREATE investment in Decarbonisation (https://www.nrf.gov.sg/files/Media_Release_CREATE_Decarbonisation_Challenge_with_ANNEX_A__B_final.pdf), a large number of positions have become available to research hydrogen and ammonia combustion.

The project is a collaborative effort between CARES, CNRS, NTU, NUS, NTNU (National Technical University of Norway) and Tohoku University (Japan). All the positions are held in Singapore and will normally last 2 years in the first instance, with the possibility to extend if funding is available. Who are we looking for?

We are seeking highly motivated combustion researchers to work in the following areas:

1) Kinetics: (i) Experiments with flow reactors and laminar flames. The successful applicant will be skilled in analytical combustion chemistry systems such as gas chromatography and laser detection; (ii) Development of detailed and reduced chemical mechanisms. Experience in combustion chemistry modelling is needed.

2) Laminar and turbulent flame fundamentals: (i) Experiments with laminar pulsed and turbulent swirl flames. Skills in flame rig design, laser diagnostics and optical methods for flames are needed. (ii) Modelling with combustion Computational Fluid Dynamics (DNS, LES), with experience in the fundamentals of turbulent combustion, CFD and massively-parallel computations.

3) High-pressure combustion: Experiments and simulations for reciprocating engines and gas turbines. For the experimental positions, the successful candidate must be skilled in optical diagnostics, engine combustion, swirl combustion, fluids handling and data analysis. For the modelling positions, experience in CFD of engines or gas turbine combustors is a prerequisite.

4) Detonations and ignition risk analysis with CFD. The position involves high-order CFD methods for capturing detonations and turbulent flow analysis for ignition. The successful candidate must be experienced with CFD.
