What we’re looking for
We seek a Technical Authority for Decarbonisation and Related Technologies to lead Lloyd’s Register’s (LR) Marine & Offshore technology development initiatives. This role involves driving industry and regulatory engagement (e.g., IACS, IMO) to advance core technologies supporting the decarbonisation of shipping. Key areas include the introduction of alternative fuels, onboard energy storage, and integrating insights from these engagements into LR’s products and services.
You will oversee activities spanning the entire lifecycle of shipping—from concept design to ship decommissioning—ensuring efforts align with risk levels, client and industry demand, and internal governance priorities.

The role
· Technical Leadership: Serve as the technical authority for decarbonisation and related technologies, shaping and implementing decarbonisation policy and strategy across the shipping lifecycle, from concept design to decommissioning.
· Technology Development:
o Develop and manage the technology development plan in collaboration with LR Marine & Offshore (M&O) stakeholders.
o Ensure the advancement of core technologies for decarbonisation-focused products and services, including LR’s Rules and Regulations and supporting materials.
· Regulatory and Industry Engagement:
o Represent Lloyd’s Register as a Panel Member in the IACS Safe Decarbonisation Panel and contribute to IMO-related activities.
o Maintain regulatory compliance and align LR’s strategies with industry standards and initiatives.
· Collaboration and Partnerships:
o Identify and establish industry collaborations with academia, manufacturers, shipbuilders, owners, and operators to develop core technologies.
o Address gaps and eliminate duplications in collaborative efforts to ensure efficient progress.
· Internal Coordination:
o Engage with internal subject matter experts to resource and manage technology development projects effectively.
o Convene focus groups and stakeholder meetings to advance decarbonisation-related technologies and services.
· Knowledge Integration: Assimilate outcomes from technology development activities into deliverables, including LR’s Rules, procedures, guidance, and training materials.
· Communication and Representation: Act as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding decarbonisation technology development objectives and activities.
· Professional Development and Mentorship:
o Pursue ongoing professional development to maintain expertise in decarbonisation and related disciplines.
o Mentor and coach employees to facilitate knowledge transfer and skill development.
· Continuous Improvement: Provide recommendations for service delivery enhancements based on stakeholder feedback to support business growth.
· Global Support: Collaborate with Global Heads of Technology and undertake additional responsibilities as directed.
What you bring
· Educational Background: A degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized tertiary institution in engineering or physical science (minimum two-year program), or relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer with qualifications from a marine or nautical institution.
· Professional Accreditation:
o Membership in a relevant professional institution.
o Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
· Language Proficiency: Strong command of the English language appropriate for professional and technical communication.
· Project Management Expertise: Demonstrable understanding of project management processes, supported by relevant experience and training.
· Financial Awareness: Previous experience in budget monitoring.
· Specialized Knowledge: Job-specific expertise (e.g., in-depth knowledge of Hydrodynamics or a business qualification such as an MBA, as determined by the role’s requirements).
