The Signature Research Programme in Health Services & Systems Research (“HSSR”) in Duke-NUS Medical School is a centre of academic excellence for research and education on the organisation, funding and delivery of health services. The programme’s focus is on public health and clinical service innovation in an increasingly complex and connected world. The major research focus of HSSR is the organisation and delivery of health and social services in the context of an ageing population. A postdoctoral researcher is sought to contribute to this cutting-edge research, which lies at the intersection of organic semiconductors, materials science, and electrochemistry. The successful candidate will engage in the synthesis of channel-layer materials, the investigation of photoresponsive mechanisms and interfacial electrochemical processes, as well as the development of flexible organic optoelectronic synapses for applications in physiological signal monitoring and related fields.

The candidate will lead experimental phage projects, design and execute research strategies, and play a pivotal role in advancing the understanding of bacteriophage dynamics in human and environmental microbiomes.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead research projects focusing on phages targeting bacteria within the human microbiome.
• Develop, implement, and manage experimental plans under the guidance of the Principal Investigator.
• Conduct molecular microbiology experiments, analyze data, and troubleshoot experimental issues.
• Prepare progress reports, present findings in lab meetings, and contribute to research discussions.
• Write, edit, and submit high-quality manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication.

Qualifications

Education: Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology, Microbial Ecology, or a closely related field, with a strong emphasis on phage research.

Technical Expertise:

• Hands-on experience in phage research, including phenotypic analysis, sequencing, and genomic studies.
• Proficiency in molecular microbiology techniques, such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cloning, and bacterial culture.

Research Skills:

• Familiarity with experimental evolution studies and genomic taxonomy.

Job Description

We are looking for a research fellow for the project on ultraprecision fabrication of functional components with additive manufacturing and micro-scale surface treatment. The candidate is required to conduct design and manufacture of the bespoke fixtures and tooling for post-processing of the 3D-printed geometries to meet the industrial requirements. He/she will also be responsible for reporting and coordinating with our stakeholders and writing technical papers.

Qualifications

Interested applicants are required to possess a PhD degree. He/she should have a good understanding in

1. Ultraprecision machining technology with excellent hands-on experience;
2. A solid background of micro-/nano-scale material removal processes and mechanisms with a good track record of publications;
3. Experienced in metal additive manufacturing and its post-processing methods; and
4. Mechanical and non-mechanical surface treatment and finishing techniques.

Contract Period:

• 2 Jan 2025 to 31 Dec 2025 (12 Months) + 1 Year Optional renewal by school.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work with the laboratories of Professor Ashok Venkitaraman, on a project studying the evolution of cancer genomes during early steps in carcinogenesis, with the long-term aim to develop better methods for early intervention.

This is an exciting opportunity to deploy expertise in computational biology in an active multidisciplinary environment, working closely with experimental cancer biologists to address major scientific problems.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will apply existing analytic pipelines and devise new algorithms to explore data derived from multiple DNA sequencing technologies (e.g., Illumina & Nanopore) to resolve cancer genome evolution at the clonal level. S/he will also analyse complementary data from other technologies, ranging from single-cell RNAseq to chromatin immunoprecipitation to chromatin accessibility (ATAC-seq), using a variety of novel cellular models established in Professor Venkitaraman’s laboratory. Experimental findings will be explored and validated using clinical genomic datasets.

Metabolic regulation of immune dysfunction during the progression of NASH to NASH-HCC

Description:

The lack of effective treatments for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and NASH-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (NASH-HCC) underscores the need to understand the transition from NASH to NASH-HCC. Identifying why some NASH patients develop HCC while others do not is a significant challenge, with growing evidence indicating that immune dysregulation plays a crucial role in this progression. The interstitial space, where cells receive nutrients and signals, significantly impacts immune function, suggesting that understanding the liver"s metabolic environment could reveal how immune cells behave during NASH progression to HCC. By profiling interstitial fluid metabolism and single-cell transcriptomics, the team aims to understand the metabolic regulation of the immune landscape in NASH to NASH-HCC progression. Using a high-fat, high-fructose, and high-cholesterol dietary mouse model that mirrors human progression, the team will study the metabolic and immune changes leading to NASH-HCC. In addition, the team’s preliminary findings show immune alterations and reduced levels of the bile acid hyodeoxycholic acid (HDCA) during NASH-HCC transition. The identified candidate will also test the potential of HDCA in preventing NASH to HCC transition, and further explore HDCA"s effects on immune cells.

Job responsibilities:

• Conduct in vitro wet lab experiments (e.g. cell culture, molecular biology and assays, microscopy etc)
• Conduct in vivo animal experiments (e.g. diet/treatment regimes, body weight & composition analyses, metabolic phenotyping, blood sampling etc)

A scientist or senior scientist position is available at the Functional Proteomics Laboratory for setting up, developing methods and performing targeted and untargeted metabolomics experiments. You will work on mass spectrometry-based identification of small molecule binders of RNA and small molecule metabolomics projects.

• Develop and run standardized protocols for untargeted metabolomics (or targeted metabolomics panels) for small molecule analysis.
• Design workflows and optimize analytical methods for performing targeted/untargeted metabolomics experiments for different sample mediums (Plasma/Urine/Tissue).
• Work with different collaborators and lead projects for small molecule metabolomics analysis on various sample types.
• Conceptualise, design and develop metabolomics assays for quantification of small molecules.
• Write and present research findings for conferences and publications.
• Contribute to project management, provision of guidance to junior researchers, including research officers.

Job Requirements

• Ph.D. degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Analytical Chemistry or a related discipline.
• Strong expertise in small molecule mass spectrometry metabolomics (preferred untargeted small molecule metabolomics expertise) with good publication record.
• Experience with liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry instrumentation, sample preparation techniques, data acquisition and interpretation.
• At least 2 years working experience in the field of metabolomics will be preferred.
• Proficiency in data processing, data analysis and interpretation will be advantageous.
