We are the University of Cambridge’s presence in Singapore, Cambridge CARES. Our activities are sponsored by the National Research Foundation’s CREATE programme. Our first research programme, the Cambridge Centre for Carbon Reduction in Chemical Technology (C4T), is a collaboration between the University of Cambridge, Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore.

The project:

In the context of the multi-partner project HYCOMBS (https://www.cares.cam.ac.uk/research/hycombs/), which is part of Singapore’s CREATE investment in Decarbonisation (https://www.nrf.gov.sg/files/Media_Release_CREATE_Decarbonisation_Challenge_with_ANNEX_A__B_final.pdf), a large number of positions have become available to research hydrogen and ammonia combustion.

The project is a collaborative effort between CARES, CNRS, NTU, NUS, NTNU (National Technical University of Norway) and Tohoku University (Japan). All the positions are held in Singapore and will normally last 2 years in the first instance, with the possibility to extend if funding is available. The successful candidate will be working under the academic supervision of one of the project’s partners depending on the particular skills and interests of the researcher. Short stays in Japan, France and Norway for working in the partner laboratories are envisaged for some of these positions. In the first instance, your application will be reviewed by CARES and re-directed to the appropriate institution and Primary Investigator.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking highly motivated combustion researchers to work in the following areas:

1) Kinetics: (i) Experiments with flow reactors and laminar flames. The successful applicant will be skilled in analytical combustion chemistry systems such as gas chromatography and laser detection; (ii) Development of detailed and reduced chemical mechanisms. Experience in combustion chemistry modelling is needed.

2) Laminar and turbulent flame fundamentals: (i) Experiments with laminar pulsed and turbulent swirl flames. Skills in flame rig design, laser diagnostics and optical methods for flames are needed. (ii) Modelling with combustion Computational Fluid Dynamics (DNS, LES), with experience in the fundamentals of turbulent combustion, CFD and massively-parallel computations.

3) High-pressure combustion: Experiments and simulations for reciprocating engines and gas turbines. For the experimental positions, the successful candidate must be skilled in optical diagnostics, engine combustion, swirl combustion, fluids handling and data analysis. For the modelling positions, experience in CFD of engines or gas turbine combustors is a prerequisite.

4) Detonations and ignition risk analysis with CFD. The position involves high-order CFD methods for capturing detonations and turbulent flow analysis for ignition. The successful candidate must be experienced with CFD.

What skills will you need?

All positions require a PhD or equivalent research experience in a combustion topic relevant to the above areas, strong motivation to work in a multi-national collaborative team, and extensive experience with report writing, journal publications, and presentations to academic and industrial settings. Connections with industry are part of the project so the researchers will have the opportunity to collaborate with industrial R&D. CARES is leading a new project “Sustainable Manufacture of Molecules and Materials (SM3)”, funded by NRF CREATE programme within the Decarbonisation Grand Challenge. SM3project is a collaboration with NTU, NUS, CARES & the University of Cambridge and EPFL. The broad aim of the project is to develop novel approaches and technologies for fully de-fossilised routes to complex functional molecules and molecular materials. The project will explore novel chemical transformations for conversion of net-zero feedstocks to building blocks typically used in pharma, agrochem and other end applications. The project will also explore novel synthetic methods for conversion of the building blocks into end-use functional molecules. Novel synthesis technologies (photoelectrochemistry, sonochemistry, mechanochemistry, etc), as well as advanced research methods (AI, chemoinformatics, high-throughput synthesis) and process metrics (LCA and technoeconomic analysis) are included in this large project.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking to fill a vacancy of a Research Fellow with a PhD in a relevant field of Computer Science / Chemical Engineering / Chemistry, who combines strong ML/AI expertise with chemical knowledge.

This job involves producing biomaterials through engineered cyanobacterial cell factories by direct carbon capture. Job Description

Research Fellow (postdoc) position in the Department of Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering at National University of Singapore (NUS). The primary objective of this position is to foster a profound design principle towards novel, efficient and robust electrochemical catalysts and reactors for the efficient conversion of CO2/CO into multi-carbon products, i.e., ethylene, ethanol and propanol.

The research fellow is required to help in guiding young students, visiting scholars, and assisting the establishment of larger research applications and facilitating initiatives with respect to sharing and developing infrastructure for electrocatalysis research within NUS.

Job Requirements

NGAP PROJECT

N-GAP: Nanophotonic GAtes with exciton-Polaritons

Many technologies and platforms have been suggested to build a quantum computer, including ions, atoms, electrons, and superconducting materials. Among these options, all-integrated photonic platforms that allow creating complex circuitry with a small footprint are very promising.

In N-GAP we will explore and exploit a hybrid state of light and matter, the excitonic polariton, to create a platform for quantum computing. Exciton polaritons, which emerge from the strong-coupling of an exciton and a photon, exhibit Kerr nonlinearities typically three orders of magnitude stronger than that found in standard photonic nonlinear crystals. The main objective of N-GAP is to further enhance the nonlinearity of the polariton systems to achieve the first experimental realisation of a deterministic CNOT gate based on polariton systems, which is the essential building block of a quantum computer.

DESCRIPTION

Transition metal dichalcogenides MX2 materials (where M=Mo or W, and X=Se or S) are one atom thick 2D layers containing heavy elements (e.g. Mo). These two properties render the optical properties of this material family unique, with electronic optically-active excitations that are extremely robust and that dominate their optical response even above room-temperature. Interestingly, the exciton-exciton interaction strength as well as the excitonic fermionic saturation have been measured to be larger than those predicted by the hydrogenic model describing excitons in conventional bulk semiconductors. This explains why just one single monolayer of TMD is able to display an interaction strength comparable to “thick” single and multiquantum wells. Furthermore, in TMDs this interaction strength can be further enhanced by using either Rydberg excitons, which have displayed an almost 5-times enhancement, charged excitons (i.e. trions), which have shown a factor 10 enhancement, or dipolaritons, which are built upon indirect excitons in stacks of TMDs and which have shown a ~10-fold enhancement.

In N-GAP we plan to exploit this enhanced exciton-exciton (or, equivalently, polariton-polariton) interaction strength by integrating TMDs into vertical and horizontal optical microcavities combining large quality factors and reduced mode volumes, as schematically shown in the Figure below. The research fellow will contribute to the optical spectroscopy of the microcavities paying special attention to the assessment of the polariton-polariton interaction strength under different configurations and to the analysis of the quantum properties of light interacting with such microcavities.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

• Candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent University level diploma in Condensed Matter Physics and/or Photonics and/or Optoelectronics.
• Candidate must be experienced in optics and/or optical spectroscopy.

For this position, we would require a post-doctoral fellow to engage in designing and running of multiple CRISPR genome screens, to interrogate and identify genes that are responsible for a host of different genome instability phenomenon uncovered in our lab in human carcinogenesis

The broad aim of the project is to develop novel approaches and technologies for fully de-fossilised routes to complex functional molecules and molecular materials. The project will explore novel chemical transformations for conversion of net-zero feedstocks to building blocks typically used in pharma, agrochem and other end applications. The project will also explore novel synthetic methods for conversion of the building blocks into end-use functional molecules. Novel synthesis technologies (photoelectrochemistry, sonochemistry, mechanochemistry, etc), as well as advanced research methods (AI, chemoinformatics, high-throughput synthesis) and process metrics (LCA and technoeconomic analysis) are included in this large project.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking to fill a vacancy of a Research Fellow or a Senior Research Fellow with experience in techno-economics and object-oriented programming. The candidate would have experience in assessing engineering reports and scientific papers on novel synthesis technologies, extracting key process performance parameters. In the context of the multi-partner project HYCOMBS (https://www.cares.cam.ac.uk/research/hycombs/), which is part of Singapore’s CREATE investment in Decarbonisation (https://www.nrf.gov.sg/files/Media_Release_CREATE_Decarbonisation_Challenge_with_ANNEX_A__B_final.pdf), a large number of positions have become available to research hydrogen and ammonia combustion.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking highly motivated combustion researchers to work in the following areas:

1) Kinetics: (i) Experiments with flow reactors and laminar flames. The successful applicant will be skilled in analytical combustion chemistry systems such as gas chromatography and laser detection; (ii) Development of detailed and reduced chemical mechanisms. Experience in combustion chemistry modelling is needed.

2) Laminar and turbulent flame fundamentals: (i) Experiments with laminar pulsed and turbulent swirl flames. Skills in flame rig design, laser diagnostics and optical methods for flames are needed. (ii) Modelling with combustion Computational Fluid Dynamics (DNS, LES), with experience in the fundamentals of turbulent combustion, CFD and massively-parallel computations.

3) High-pressure combustion: Experiments and simulations for reciprocating engines and gas turbines. For the experimental positions, the successful candidate must be skilled in optical diagnostics, engine combustion, swirl combustion, fluids handling and data analysis. For the modelling positions, experience in CFD of engines or gas turbine combustors is a prerequisite.

4) Detonations and ignition risk analysis with CFD. The position involves high-order CFD methods for capturing detonations and turbulent flow analysis for ignition. The successful candidate must be experienced with CFD.
