RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow to play a leading role in a cutting-edge interdisciplinary and multi-institute research project: Developing a risk assessment and communication platform to translate climate projections to policy. The successful candidate will work with Associate Professor Terry van Gevelt (Singapore Management University), Professor Winston Chow (Singapore Management University), Professor Adam Switzer (Nanyang Technological University), Associate Professor Sonny Rosenthal (Nanyang Technological University) and Associate Professor Brian McAdoo (Duke University) to develop a climate risk and communication platform for Singapore and other major cities in Southeast Asia. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of climate risk reduction and developing novel communication strategies to translate climate science to policy in Singapore and the region.

The successful candidate will:

• Conduct research to identify key climate risks in Singapore and other major cities in Southeast Asia;
• Examine instances of successful adaptation or maladaptation, and path dependencies in climate risk reduction approaches;
• Contribute to the development of a climate risk communication platform built around immersive virtual reality narratives;
• Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team, policymakers, and other stakeholders to translate research findings into actionable policies and practices;
• Publish research findings in high-impact interdisciplinary journals and present at international conferences;
• Mentor and collaborate with graduate and undergraduate students.

Project Title: Sustainable catalysts for the synthesis of carbon-heteroatom bonds

Project Introduction:

Transition-metal catalyzed carbon-heteroatom strategies for the generation of selective carbon-nitrogen, carbon-sulfur and carbon-oxygen bonds has emerged as a versatile strategy for chemical synthesis. In particular, the intense demand for these strategies has been driven by its applications in producing key intermediates which are prevalent building blocks for the construction of many natural products and pharmaceuticals. Many of the existing protocols for performing this type of transformation have been accomplished using toxic and expensive transition metals such as palladium, nickel, rhodium and ruthenium metal catalysts. In most instances, the catalysts are easily rendered ineffective unless carried out under stringent inert conditions and anhydrous solvents. Generally, the catalytic systems based on such transition metals are perceived as expensive methodologies with higher toxicity.

Despite advances made in carbon-heteroatom bonds formation reactions, there is still a pertinent need to develop new protocols that are less toxic, sustainable, and experimentally simple. In this project, we aim to address this challenge by applying more environmentally benign metal salts as catalysts for carbon-heteroatom bonds formation reactions.

Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field is required.
• Candidate must have at least one year of experience working in a chemistry lab.
• Experience in the synthesis and characterization of organic compounds is necessary.
• Familiarity with a broad range of organic synthesis techniques is essential. This includes handling air and/or moisture sensitive chemicals and conducting experiments under inert atmosphere conditions.

The applicant will collaborate with Research Prof. Itai Arad in the intersection of complexity theory, quantum information and quantum foundations. The job will include studying problems related to the quantum PCP conjecture. We will try to attack this problem by studying classical toy models that posses the central ingredients of the quantum problem, yet are easier since they are classical. In particular, we shall work on a "quasi-quantum" theory, which deals classical probability distributions as generalizations of quantum states. We will study the computational complexity of the local Hamiltonian problem over these states. We are looking for a highly motivated and talented individual with a passion in cancer genomics, biology, and radiation research to join the Tan Chin Tuan Laboratory of Optical Imaging, Photodynamic, and Proton Therapy - Precision Radiation Oncology Programme (PROP). The scope of the projects conducted under the premise of PROP includes 1) early- and late-phase clinical trials; 2) cancer genomics and data science; and 3) translational cancer and radiation biology. For this role, you will be mainly working with the Principal Investigator (PI) and the research teams under Theme 2. The projects involve studying cancer genomics of two main cancers, nasopharyngeal and prostate cancer, and the mechanistic pathways involved or identification of novel biomarkers for radioresistance. Samples from consented patients will be used for next-generation sequencing and/or microarray to generate “big data” for further analysis by our data scientists. You will be involved in inter-departmental collaborations with oncologists, pathologists, scientists, and local and international collaborators.

You will participate in the following activities:

- Identify and study the mechanistic pathways involved in radioresistant cancers.

- Design and optimise new experiment protocols when necessary, e.g. functional validation of novel biomarkers.

- Lead and mentor junior staff in sample processing, experiments, data analysis, and database updates (Senior Research Officer).

- Actively engage internal clinical and data science teams as well as external collaborators to ensure alignment with overall research goals.

- Participate in research activities, lab meetings/presentations, manuscript preparations, and audits.

Having witnessed the achievements of the large models in 2023, there has been a new surge of machine learning and AI models in recent days, which again puts up the public concerns about the explosively increasing energy consumption during the model training phase. According to Dr. Sajjad Moazeni, an AI researcher at University of Washington, the training of GPT-3 roughly consumes 10 gigawatt-hour of electricity ^([1]), approximately equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of 440,000 average Singapore households in 2021 ^([2]).

Significant efforts have been devoted to improving the efficiency of the model training phase, in terms of hardware, model architecture, networking, and algorithm design, etc. The PI (Dr. Zhang Junyu) of this project would like to tackle this problem from the algorithmic perspective, by developing theoretical understanding of the open questions on the training algorithms, in terms of the convergence, complexity, local landscape properties, and potential algorithmic improvement based on the new theoretical findings.

A TYPICAL DAY

My day starts at 8am, although like my colleagues, I often arrive earlier to get set up for the day. I am teaching 4 out of a possible 5, 60 minute lessons today across different year groups. The school really supports me in thinking outside the box to creatively develop new and exciting learning opportunities in different learning environments. As it is the start of the year, I am really working hard to learn all the names, make a connection with every learner and build learning-focused relationships. At lunchtime I have a duty in the cafeteria and talk to the learners about their day. The teaching day finishes at 3.25pm and today I am running an after-school activity with technical lego in the Makerspace as this is a passion of mine! After I return the learners to the cafeteria to be picked up, I head back to my learning area to collaborate on some planning, complete some marking and check my emails. I am looking forward to the forthcoming Learning trip and will pop to the nearby shops on the way home to get some equipment ready for the trip.
