The Aviation Innovation Research (AIR) Lab

The joint CAAS-Thales innovation lab known as ‘AIR Lab’ started to operate on 1st November 2019 with the objective to develop Proof of Concepts (POCs) or Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) of advanced and open technologies for future Air Traffic Management (ATM). Currently, the joint lab employs a team of 40 Thales engineers and 12 CAAS engineers and air traffic controllers operating in a vibrant ecosystem involving several Singaporean SMEs and start-ups, as well as key research institutes.

Thales engineers include 10 domain experts – with more than 10 years of experience – coming from Thales ATM centers of competence in France and Australia. These experts are coaching both the local Thales and CAAS engineers.

ROLE DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As aSoftware Backend Engineer, you are accountable for:

• Design and build APIs to provide data for the stream-aligned squads.

• Implement features and associated automated unit and integration tests. If appropriate implement security and load tests.

• Improve and maintain the DataLake cybersecurity posture w.r.t data governance and cybersecurity standards by working with other stakeholders (e.g., Data Architect, Data Assessment Office, Cybersecurity Office).

• Improve and maintain the DataLake service levels for reliable data flow, health of infrastructure (i.e., compute and storage) and security.

• Improve and maintain the total cost of ownership of data; this activity includes raising efficiencies around FinOps, CloudOps.

• Improve and maintain the architecture transforming data between the DataLake and a distributed search and analytics engine (e.g., ElasticSearch).

• Lead the technical evolution of the DataLake by exploring new methods, techniques, algorithms (e.g., data meshes, AI/MLOps infrastructure).

• Work with the Data Architect to effect best practices to the engineering organization.

• Write and review the necessary technical and functional documentation in documentation repositories (e.g., backstage.io, JIRA, READMEs).

• Work in an agile, cross-functional multinational team, actively supporting the team's success.

KEY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

To be successful in your role, you will have demonstrated and/or acquired the following knowledge and experience:

Education

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information Technology with a minimum of 3 years of working experience.

- Master's degree in Computer Science or Data Science, if applicable

We are looking for a seasoned AWS Technical Architect to design, implement, and optimize our cloud infrastructure on AWS. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with AWS services, infrastructure automation using Terraform, and in-depth knowledge of networking, compute, storage, database, monitoring, and alerting solutions. This role is critical to ensure our cloud infrastructure is secure, scalable, and efficient.

Required experience of GCC and IM8 policies.

Experience with advanced AWS tools and frameworks like Kinesis, Chime, OpenSearch, and Generative AI (GenAI) using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is highly valued.

Key Responsibilities

Cloud Architecture and Design

• Design and implement highly available, resilient, and scalable architectures on AWS, including networking, compute, storage, and database solutions.
• Architect solutions that leverage AWS best practices for security, cost optimization, and performance.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC):

• Develop, maintain, and manage Terraform configurations for automated provisioning and management of AWS resources.
• Implement best practices in version control, modularization, and reuse to ensure IaC maintainability and scalability.

Networking and Security:

• Design secure VPC architectures, subnets, routing, VPNs, and peering connections for multi-region and hybrid environments.
• Manage security groups, network ACLs, and identity access management (IAM) to ensure a secure AWS environment.

Compute, Storage, and Database Solutions:

• o Leverage AWS services like EC2, ECS Fargate, and Lambda for compute workloads, based on application needs.
• o Design scalable storage solutions using S3, EBS, and EFS.
• o Architect and optimize database solutions with RDS, DynamoDB, and Aurora.

Monitoring, Logging, and Alerting:

• Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions using CloudWatch, CloudTrail, and the ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana) to ensure observability and troubleshooting capabilities.
• Set up proactive alerts and monitoring for performance and security issues to minimize downtime and optimize performance.

Job Description:

o Apply technical knowledge and customer insights to create a migration and modernization roadmap with customers using the Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF). Architect solutions to meet business and IT needs, ensuring technical viability of new projects and successful deployments, while orchestrating key resources and infusing key Infrastructure technologies (e.g. Windows and Linux IaaS, Security, Networking, etc.), and Application Development and DevOps technologies (e.g. App Service, containers, serverless, cloud native, etc.) as appropriate

o Collaborate with other Cloud Solution Architects and Microsoft stakeholders in developing complex end-to-end Enterprise solutions on the Microsoft Azure platform

o Ensure all solutions leverage the design and operations guidance according to the Well-Architected framework across all pillars, including performance efficiency, security, operational excellence, reliability, and cost optimization

o Run Architectural Design Sessions to build plan for implementing solution governing design in line with customer business goals and their technical environment. Outcome is consensus on solution design and next steps towards production deployment. Use CAF Landing Zones to rapidly prototype and deliver proof-of-concepts that accelerate production deployment

o Develop deep relationships with key customer IT decision makers, who drive long-term cloud adoption within their company to enable them to be cloud advocates

o Troubleshoot technical issues to prove the value of implementation of Azure technologies

o Collaborate with others in developing complex end-to-end Enterprise solutions on the Microsoft Azure platform

Skill Sets:

o Certification in one of the following technologies preferred: Cloud Infrastructure, Data Analytics, Networking, Security, cloud-native application architecture (i.e. containers, microservices, API management), modern software development techniques like DevOps and CI/CD tool chains (i.e. Jenkins, Spinnaker, Azure developer services, GitHub) and container orchestration systems (i.e. Docker, Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, Azure Kubernetes Service, GitHub), AI/ML, IOT, etc.

o Certification in one or more of the following programming languages preferred: C++, C#, Java, Node.js, Python

o Experience and understanding of large- scale application portfolios in enterprise-wide environments (including migration of on-premise workloads to the cloud)

o Knowledge and hands on experience of Containers, Micro-Services and Kubernetes

o Ability to articulate Technical and Business value of Cloud services to customers and stakeholders

o Experience conducting Assessment & Discovery workshops with customers, designing scalable and highly available cloud service architectures, and then implementing them for customers

o Hands on experience with Azure and/or AWS and/or GCP

o Knowledge of Hybrid and Cloud Networking along with Cloud Native Security Technologies

o Hands on experience in IAC (Terraform and other automation) toolsets

o Hands-on experience working with business units to transform workflows
