Financial Controller/Finance Director with hospitality industry experience

Our client provides travel agencies and tour operator services to a pristine natural reserve, which is a premium/high end holiday resort in Indonesia. The co is backed by an owner of other large and global businesses.


For this role, you ,we are seeking a highly motivated and experienced finance professional to join as Director of Finance/Financial Controller. As a member of the Senior Management Team, you will focus on the delivery of strategic plans and communicating results to key stakeholders. You will guide the finance organization to ensure efficiency, compliance and improve quality of service & reporting and oversee the budgeting, forecasting and reporting. You will also be responsible for supporting external audit with statutory compliance, and support and appraise commercial opportunities and any future development opportunities.


The role reports to the COO and act as his right hand person in a lean set up. For this role, the co allows a work from home arrangement almost 90% of the time. There will be some required travels to Batam and the resort (based in Indonesia). For this role, we require a cand from the hospitality industry (hotel or resorts preferred) who has both the strategic acumen and the ability to be hands-on at the same time. The role will manage 1 accounting manager based in Singapore and 1 controller (based in Indonesia).


Role and Responsibilities:


1. Executive Leadership & Support – as part of the Senior Management Team

  • Support formulation of short, medium and long-term Strategic Objectives.
  • Work closely with the Financial Controller, General Manager (GM), Director of Sales & Marketing (DirS&M) and of department heads to provide regular reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chairman and committees on progress and results against the corporate strategy, long-term strategic plan and annual business plan.
  • Act as a key member of the management team, providing recommendations to enhance business performance, evaluating profit opportunities, managing costs,
  • Provide leadership for continuous evaluation of short-term and long-term strategic financial objectives as well as supporting analysis of commercial opportunities that arise.
  • Evaluate and advise on the impact of potential new strategies and any changes to the commercial and regulatory environment.

2. Development

  • Support the alignment of development opportunities with the company’s long-term strategic growth objectives.
  • Provide investment analysis on proposed new investment opportunities.
  • Provide support and make recommendations on proposed development opportunities to enhance shareholder value.
  • Oversee and manage project-related finance matters in accordance with approved budgets.

3. Financial Leadership

  • Direct and oversee all aspects of the operational finance and accounting functions.
  • Develop, manage and continually review processes for financial forecasting, budgeting, performance monitoring and reporting to the senior management team, COO & Chairman.
  • Provide leadership and support to local management teams for continuous performance delivery as well as supporting analysis of commercial opportunities that arise.
  • Lead the process to produce an annual budget and business plan.
  • Monitor working capital, cash balances and liquidity risks within all parts of the business.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with senior executives within the business so as to identify their operational needs and provide a full range of business solutions measured by meaningful KPIs.
  • Statutory Compliance – ensure compliance with relevant national and international accounting standards, tax laws and corporate regulations as advised by external audit and Accounting Advisors.
  • Be a strategic business partner to the operations teams by providing financial leadership and strategic perspective in developing and monitoring business plans to achieve profit and growth objectives.
    • Advise the GM, DirS&M and HODs on business issues, challenges & opportunities, and performance.
    • Take a proactive role during property visits providing trouble shooting for respective property costs, internal controls, revenue opportunities, brand standards, etc.

4. Statutory Compliance and Control – (supported by and advised by external Audit)

  • Ensure that effective internal controls are in place and maintained.
  • Assess business risks and implement risk mitigation strategies as required and advised - improve processes associated with managing financial, operational, and compliance risks.
  • Represent the company in its relationships with external auditors and investigate their findings and recommendations.

5. Functional Oversight and Implementation Responsibility – (in partnership with external advisors / Company Secretary)

  • Provide representation and liaise with External Audit, Tax and Legal Advisors as required.
  • Statutory Compliance - enforce compliance with relevant national and international accounting standards, tax laws and corporate regulations as advised from time to time by Auditors.
  • Liaise with Company Secretary and support in the execution of company secretarial duties:
    • Monitor all major contracts and review for financial and commercial robustness.
    • Maintain standard form contracts for all aspects of the business and enforce their use.
    • Maintain appropriate levels of insurance.

6. Accounting Processes


The following are specific responsibilities and contributions to be undertaken by the unit finance teams under the guidance of and supported by the Director of Finance:

  • Facilitate the business planning processes:
    • operating and capital budgets
    • forecasting
    • standard reporting processes
      • Cashflow
      • Periodic Revenue Reporting (incl. KPIs), Month end reporting, Annual reporting).
  • Provide direction and support to ensure compliance on:
    • Balance sheet analysis/certification
    • Hotel audits and internal control standards
    • P&L reviews,
    • Technical accounting
    • Maintenance of Fixed Asset Registers
  • Manage and implement financial systems and analysis strategies (procurement, payroll, revenue and reservations, etc.).

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • MBA, Masters in Finance, or CPA preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in finance, with at least 3 years in the hospitality industry (hotels or resorts preferred).
  • Proven track record of financial leadership, cost control initiatives, and driving profitability in hotel environments.
  • Thorough understanding of financial principles, accounting standards (GAAP/IFRS), and regulatory requirements in the hospitality industry.
  • Added exposure to Indonesia is useful (but not a must)
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, financial modeling, and experience with hotel-specific software.
  • Familiarity with hotel operations and industry performance metrics.
  • Strong leadership skills. Able to be hands-on when required.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Able to work in fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in the English language, both verbal and written.
  • Open to the 90% WFH arrangement (as this entity does not have a physical presence although the parent co has a office in town).
  • Curious and able to think out of the box. Enthusiastic with a passion for his/her job.
  • Flexible, adaptable, entrepreneurial.
