MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
SPECIFIC
- Execute assigned tasks under the direction of the Head of Department, adhering to the Hospital, national guidelines.
- In addition to delivering professional laboratory services, Consultants, as senior personnel, are expected to provide leadership across all staff levels, including teaching, training, and research.
- Engage in discussions with the Associate Consultant or registrar, and when needed, evaluate challenging and intricate laboratory matters referred for assessment by the Associate Consultant or registrar.
- Promptly inform and seek advice from the Head of Department in instances of significant or critical clinical situations that could impact patient well-being or lives.
- When directly involved in patient care, provide updates on the patient's condition to the patient, their legal guardian, or individuals designated by the patient. For unconscious or mentally incompetent patients without a designated representative, communicate with the patient's next-of-kin or responsible family members.
- Participate in departmental meetings, morphology sessions, and other laboratory rounds.
- Fulfill responsibilities of a lower-grade position as necessary.
- Provide training and oversight to junior doctors, trainees, and residents.
GENERAL
- Granted general and specialist clinical privileges, including admitting rights, in alignment with the accredited and registered specialty recognized by the governing bodies, to deliver patient care and clinical services within the respective field of expertise as a Consultant, contingent upon compliance with their medical registration conditions with SMC.
- Lead, coordinate, and oversee quality improvement endeavors at both the Hospital-wide and Departmental levels, while actively supporting staff training and development efforts.
- Serve as a catalyst for change and advocate for mindset shifts regarding Hospital-wide and Departmental initiatives, fostering a culture of collaboration and effective teamwork.
- Undertake various responsibilities, including administrative tasks and committee assignments, as delegated by the Head of Department, Divisional Chairpersons, and Chairman Medical Board.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
- MBBS (Singapore universities) or equivalent, and local exit examination, FRCPA, MRCPath, FRCPath or equivalent, registrable with SMC; completed Specialist training requirements of relevant specialties, accepted for accreditation by the MOH Specialist Accreditation Board & Specialist registration with Singapore Medical Council.
- Doctors with conditional / temporary medical registration with SMC are to practice within the conditions of their registration.
EXPERIENCE
- For doctors with local qualifications
At least 1.5 years to 2 years’ experience as Associate Consultant.
- For doctors with overseas qualifications
Generally, must have the equivalent years of post-housemanship and specialty training experience as a local graduate, and minimally 2 years of specialist experience post exit certification by an overseas centre of repute. Accepted for specialist accreditation by MOH Specialist Accreditation Board and specialist registration by Singapore Medical Council.
