As a Research Scientist / Senior Research Scientist, you will be a key technical leader in R&D and Solutions Innovation, a group within the Tate & Lyle Innovation & Commercial Development (ICD) Division.
You will play a key role in acting as the centre of the product development process, including concept development, business case creation, product design and specifications, scale-up to manufacturing, and new product introduction to customers.

We’re looking to recruit a Research Scientist / Senior Research Scientist, reporting to the Director R&D Texturant, R&D and Solutions Innovation, based in Chicago.
This is a varied role for a person who possesses a strong chemistry / organic chemistry background preferably worked in a food ingredients industry and possesses a business-centric mindset.

What You’ll Be Doing
Work hands-on in the high throughput lab to conduct experiments for the development of new ingredients and to optimize existing products and processes.
- Participate in testing, installation, and commissioning activities of high throughput laboratory equipment.
- Develop and validate methods for the characterization of ingredients.
- Develop, implement, and improve automated laboratory workflows.
- Work collaboratively with ICD platform teams in Chicago.
Lead modified starch manufacturing scale-up in the APAC region.
- Occasional travel to throughout to conduct manufacturing trials.
- Develop experimental scale-up plans to lead trials.
Other
- Participate in global new product development teams.
- Lead new product development projects.
- Work closely with ICD project managers and platform leads to conduct voice-of-customer meetings within the Asia-Pacific region.
- Support new product development initiatives for all of ICD platforms.
Specifically experienced in any of the areas of ingredient design from the following is desirable.
- Chemical modification or physical processing of food ingredients
- Tapioca and/or corn-based food ingredients knowledge
- Experience in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and its integration with laboratory workflows
- Experience in performing data science, data analysis, and data visualization using tools such as experimental design software or Power BI
- Knowledge/experience in software programming (C# and Python)
Location
This role is assigned to be based in our APAC HQ located at Biopolis, Singapore (Buona Vista / One North MRT)
What You’ll have
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related disciplines and 3+ years of industrial experience, or an MS degree with 6+ years of industrial experience.
- Fluency in English
- Able to converse in a secondary language is an added plus (Mandarin, Thai, Bahasa) as this role interacts with Thailand, China, and Indonesia frequently.
- Deep experience in organic chemistry and analytical characterization is required.
- Broad knowledge and experience characterizing ingredients using a wide array of analytical techniques such as rheology and wet chemistry applications are required.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and a willingness to tackle problems independently by root cause analysis are required.
- Basic engineering knowledge, e.g. mechanical and electrical, experience in mechanical and instrument maintenance is required.
- Able to travel regionally and participate in early morning OR night calls with the US weekly.
