Job Description
The Department of Ophthalmology at the National University of Singapore/ National University Hospital is seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual to take on a significant role in this exciting and rapidly developing research group.
He/ She will be expected to demonstrate expertise in the following areas, but not limited to:
- Possessing a cross-disciplinary background in Vision Science encompassing binocular vision, comparative optics, retinal anatomy, behavioral psychophysics, eye movements and visual attention, and the biology of the myopic eye.
- Ability to advance the development of the guinea pig model of myopia, refining the model to swiftly induce myopic staphyloma with human-like characteristics such as bidirectional sensitivity to defocus, typical mammalian ocular structure, excellent optics, and a sufficiently large eye suitable for surgical and pharmaceutical interventions.
- Proficiency in characterizing the biological properties of myopic tissues using proteomics, SWATH-MS, RNA sequencing, immunohistochemistry, and PCR techniques.
- Capability to optimize a guinea pig model of myopia for rapid testing and development of new chemical entities (NCEs) aimed at myopia inhibition.
- Competence in applying innovative 3D imaging methods and advanced eye models to assess the impacts of myopia treatments and interventions.
- Skill in exploring mitigating factors and evaluating scleral treatments, including cross-linking methodologies.
- Extensive experience in budget management, along with qualifications and experience in research management and formal and informal training in research commercialization.
- Publishing research outcomes in prestigious international journals and disseminating research and scholarly results through reputable channels.
- Conducting and coordinating research collaboratively with other universities and research institutes in Singapore, aligning with the NUS/NUS Dept of Ophthalmology’s research strategy alongside Principal Investigators and Collaborators.
- Managing research projects within a team-based, cross-functional research environment, including supervision of doctoral and master's students, research assistants, technical staff, and other support personnel.
- Presenting research findings and papers at academic and professional conferences, contributing to the external visibility of the department.
- Supporting grant writing and acquiring external grants in roles such as co-investigator and co-PI.
- Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations in all work aspects.
Qualifications
• Ph.D. in Neurobiology, Vision Science or related discipline
• Previous experience in mammalian models of myopic staphyloma, imaging and analysis would be an advantage
• Able to work independently, as well as in a team-based, cross-functional research team
