The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant (part-time) on a 12-month contract at the Natural Sciences and Science Education Department.
Project Title: Construction and Validation of Scientific Practices Survey Instrument for School
Project Introduction: This project aims to construct and validate a set of survey instruments for evaluating secondary students’ scientific practices or the ways of thinking and doing science in four schools. Interviews with selected students will be conducted to find out more about their survey responses as part of the validation. The project is at its mid-way mark and data will be collected from approximately two more schools.
Requirements:
Essential
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Science Education, or a related field
- Possess excellent communication skills with a good command of English to perform literature reviews, write progress reports and create visual infographics for presentations.
- Ability to take initiative and work flexibly, as part of a team, as well as independently with minimum supervision
- Able to travel to schools spread across Singapore
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills
- Able to work within tight deadlines
- Takes initiative to communicate with schools and research team as necessary to ensure smooth operation of the research study
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
Preferred
- Experience and/or interest in social science or education research
- Experience in qualitative analysis (e.g., discourse analysis) and/or quantitative analysis (e.g., Rasch analysis)
- Experience with NVivo, Winsteps, or other similar data analysis software
- Familiarity with assessment and evaluation in social sciences/education research.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct literature review
- Assist with data collection
- Organise and manage data
- Perform research-related administrative work, e.g. purchase of material/equipment for research
- Transcribe audio and video recordings
- Conduct data analysis using softwares such as Nvivo and Winsteps
- Assist in organising project-related workshops and activities
- Any other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator
