The Role
The Chief Officer is responsible for managing the deck department, ensuring the safety and efficiency of the ship’s operations, and supervising the ship’s crew. This role involves significant responsibility for cargo operations, navigation, and compliance with international maritime regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
● Oversee the daily operations of the engine room, including the main engine, auxiliary engines, and other machinery.
● Ensure all machinery operates efficiently and safely.
● Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of machinery and equipment.
● Develop and implement a maintenance schedule for all mechanical and electrical systems.
● Supervise and participate in the repair and overhaul of engines, pumps, generators, and other equipment.
● Manage spare parts inventory and procurement.
● Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations, including SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) and MARPOL (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships).
● Maintain safety equipment and ensure it is in good working order.
● Conduct safety drills and training for the engine room crew.
● Supervise, train, and mentor the engine room staff.
● Allocate tasks and ensure efficient use of crew resources.
● Handle disciplinary actions and resolve crew-related issues.
● Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and operational performance.
● Prepare reports on technical issues and machinery performance for the Master and shore-based personnel.
● Lead emergency response efforts in case of engine room incidents or machinery failures.
● Ensure the crew is trained in emergency procedures related to machinery and mechanical systems.
● Act as a liaison between the Chief Engineer and other departments, including the deck crew and shore-based management.
● Communicate effectively with the Master regarding operational issues and technical challenges.
The ideal candidate should preferably:
● Possess at least 5 years of experience as a Chief Engineer onboard a dredger vessel.
