The Role
The Second Engineer is responsible for supporting the Chief Engineer in the maintenance, operation, and repair of the ship’s machinery and mechanical systems. This role involves hands-on work in the engine room, supervising engine room staff, and ensuring that all mechanical and electrical systems are running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities:
● Assist the Chief Engineer in the daily operations and management of the engine room.
● Monitor and operate machinery including main engines, generators, pumps, and compressors.
● Conduct routine checks and inspections of engine room equipment to ensure proper functioning.
● Perform regular maintenance tasks on machinery and equipment according to the maintenance schedule.
● Assist in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and electrical faults.
● Support the Chief Engineer in managing spare parts inventory and arranging procurement.
● Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations, including SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) and MARPOL (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships).
● Maintain safety equipment in the engine room and ensure it is in good working condition.
● Participate in safety drills and training sessions.
● Supervise engine room ratings and other technical crew members.
● Allocate tasks and ensure the effective use of crew resources in the engine room.
● Provide training and guidance to junior engine room staff.
● Maintain accurate records of machinery performance, maintenance, and repairs.
● Prepare reports on technical issues and assist in documenting engine room operations.
● Assist in emergency response efforts in case of engine room incidents, including machinery failures or fires.
● Ensure preparedness for emergency situations and that crew members are trained in relevant procedures.
● Act as a liaison between the Chief Engineer and the engine room staff.
● Communicate effectively with other departments regarding technical issues and operational needs.
The ideal candidate should preferably:
● Possess at least 5 years of experience as a Second Engineer onboard a dredger vessel.
