Job Description

The Experimental Marine Ecology Laboratory (EMEL) within the Department of Biological Sciences at the National University of Singapore is seeking to appoint THREE exceptional candidates to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on a major new project “Maximizing the beneficial environmental effects of tropical hybrid shorelines (MaxBETH)”. This interdisciplinary research aims to determine how hybrid coastal protection systems can be implemented at large scales in Singapore by assessing the challenges and benefits of scaling up hybrid shoreline solutions and identifying the impacts of hybrid shorelines on biophysical processes.

1. Incorporating habitat complexity into artificial shorelines at multiple scales

Explore how future coastal defences can incorporate complex structures across scales from millimeters to 100s of meters.

2. Environmental effects and ecosystem functioning of hybrid shoreline solutions

Elucidate the biogeochemical and ecological indicators of ecosystem functioning. Compare hybrid to natural shorelines.

3. Assess the impacts of hybrid solutions on carbon and nutrient cycling

Quantify carbon and nutrient content in sediment cores, and measure carbon flux rate at coastal sites with and without hybrid solutions.

All positions include the following responsibilities:

  • Project management including coordinating with sister projects
  • Preparing research manuscripts, reports and presentations
  • Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students

Qualifications

Applicants should have completed a PhD in marine biology or ecology. They should have a history of publications consummate with their career stage. Research skills including leadership, strong statistical and analytical skills, excellent writing abilities, and the capacity to work within a diverse group of ecologists and marine scientists, are desirable. Candidates with experience in hybrid shorelines, ecological engineering, and related nature-based solutions will be given priority.

Skills:

  • Experimental design and analysis (including expertise in R)
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent time and resource management

Experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct experimental work in field, lab, and aquaria
  • Familiarity with nature-based solutions/ecological engineering/hybrid shorelines
  • Certified and experienced scuba divers would be preferred
