The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is a University Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University Singapore that conducts fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies. Computational resources are available through a dedicated cluster and collaboration with the High-Performance Computing Centre of NTU. In addition, EOS hosts state-of-the-art analytical facilities for petrological and geochemical analysis, and a Community Engagement office that co-creates learning opportunities for a range of audiences to promote a safer and more sustainable future.
EOS is looking for an ambitious, highly motivated Research Engineer II. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof Emma Hill on the science and practice of communication of geohazards research to various stakeholder groups, including the public, government agencies, and NGOs. Areas of research to be covered include earthquake hazards, disaster response, and sea-level rise. The incumbent may also be required to assist with literature reviews on these topics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Generate social media content on topics related to geohazards research and the funded research, including preparation for the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Sumatran-Andaman earthquake, on which the team is writing a scientific review.
- Research effective science communication strategies, including the potential role of Generative AI in facilitating science communication of geohazards topics.
- Support the research group in science communication activities.
- Assist with stakeholder engagement on topics of earthquake hazard, disaster response, and sea-level rise.
- Assist as needed with background literature reviews on scientific research related to the project.
Job Requirements:
- Minimally a Bachelor’s degree in Earth or environmental science.
- At least 4 years of experience working in an environmental science field.
- Demonstrated experience in public engagement and science communication on environmental topics.
- Collaborative mindset and strong teamwork skills.
- Excellent spoken and written English communication skills is essential to conduct research and handle social media content.
- Evidence of experience conducting research in an environmental field.
- Demonstrated curiosity and enthusiasm to learn about and communicate a range of Earth and environmental science topics.
