Position: Senior Building Energy Specialist

Job Description:

Technical Ability

• Demonstrate specialist knowledge in building energy optimization, with expertise in at least two or more of the following practices: environmental design, sustainability benchmarking/implementation, daylight & shading design, sustainable systems, materials, waste management, and building physics.
• Provide consultancy for high-quality, high-performance, and sustainable buildings, adhering to technical standards, cost constraints, and project timelines.
• Frame client briefs in terms of environmental and sustainable aspirations, delivering technical solutions that meet these briefs.
• Support and mentor junior and graduate team members, nurturing their development.
• Exhibit awareness and understanding of interdisciplinary approaches within projects.

Project Management

• Communicate effectively with clients, architects, and other design team members, maintaining clarity and confidence.
• Organize junior staff to ensure solutions are achieved within agreed time scales.
• Maintain a comprehensive overview of project progress, explaining the status of relevant sections as needed.
• Be aware of contractual agreements and relationships on the project.
• Mentor junior staff, providing guidance and support.

Marketing

• Assist in generating business and fostering positive client relationships.
• Report feedback or issues concerning projects to enhance client satisfaction and project outcomes.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and design team members.

Qualified Candidates Ideally Possess:

• Bachelor’s or higher degree in building engineering, environmental building design, architectural engineering, building services engineering, or building science.
• Chartered status or working towards Chartership is highly desired.
• 5+ years of professional experience in an engineering or sustainability consulting firm.
• Proven experience in dynamic thermal modelling and energy modelling analysis, including daylight modelling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and parametric modelling.
• Proficiency in IES VE, Radiance, Microsoft Excel, and experience with software such as Grasshopper, eQuest, EnergyPlus, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign), Rhino, or general programming/data visualization skills.
• Successful track record of delivering sustainable and environmental design inputs to public and private sector projects, with a focus on building energy performance.
• Experience in engaging and negotiating with senior management and peers, influencing others outside of formal management structures.
• Practical knowledge of managing small project teams and selecting appropriate frameworks/tools.
• Strong writing skills for producing detailed reports.
• Proficiency in computer and hand drafting, written and spoken English, and excellent verbal, interpersonal, and writing skills.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize workloads, multitask, and demonstrate excellent analytical skills.
