About the role


The Business Analyst role will be dedicated to the Trading & Shipping business and will drive long term enhancement of the Trading & Shipping suite of software solutions by ensuring business processes and application functionalities for both current and future state are collated and implemented.


The Business Analyst will work closely with project specialists, business stakeholders, technical members of the Trading & Shipping Tech Team team and the wider IT group to extract value from the application portfolio whilst remaining consistent with Ampol Group’s overall strategic IT direction.

Acting as the pivot or intermediary between end-users and IT to ensure that business/user requirements are delivered in IT solutions.


This includes leading the gathering and analysis of Ampol’s business objectives and requirements, preparation of high-level process and system designs, identification and recommendation of solutions, assessment of business impact, and the development of clearly defined Business Cases - in partnership with business stakeholders.


In this role activities will relate to the more advanced, complex or costly assignments.



Key responsibilities


Project Delivery

• Develop business cases under Ampol Financial & Project Frameworks and Governance, to enable informed prioritisation of initiatives.

• Ensure high level benefits are captured, and ownership of their delivery is agreed.

• Work in collaboration with Decision Support to build financial models.

• Scope and estimate timeframes and deliverables for Phase 0 -2 of initiatives.

• Act as stakeholder and SME in projects from Phase 3 – 5 to ensure that requirements are delivered as agreed.


Strategy and vision

• Maintain a watching brief on technologies so as to be able to provide input to direction setting – including changes to regulatory frameworks.

• Provide input to development of technology and application roadmaps in support Business & IT strategies as required.

• Perform gap analysis to compare technology offerings with requirements and / or strategies.


Vendor Management

• Build and maintain effective working relationships with external vendors and suppliers in support of Ampol objectives.

• Identify potential vendors for potential solutions.

• Participate in vendor solution evaluation.


Stakeholder Management

• Build and develop effective working relationships with business & customers to ensure business requirements are understood.

• Identify Subject Matter Experts within the organisation.

• Educate and negotiate with business stakeholders to match requirements to standardised processes or systems where appropriate.

• Leadership

• Mentor of Business Analysts in team.


Project Management

• Project manage specific assigned smaller projects in the delivery of Phase 0 – Phase 2 enhancements, including management of internal and external resources assigned to the project, budgets, and scope.



Qualifications & experience


• Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (such as Business, IT, Engineering, Accounting) or significant equivalent workplace experience.

• ITIL v3 or 4 Foundation certified.

• BABOK certification highly regarded.

• Proven experience in CTRM, Shipping Management and Risk Systems (eg. Allegro, Aspect, Openlink Endur, TriplePoint, IMOS, SoftMar, Lacima, etc).

• Proven experience in performing business analysis and stakeholder management in the Trading and Shipping business.

• A minimum of 5 years proven experience in Business Analysis.

• Proven experience in successful development of Business Cases.

• Proven experience and track record in the successful implementation of IT projects.

• Sound general IT experience (applications and/or infrastructure) including systemic knowledge of IT development, operational and change management processes and methodologies.

• Experience in large and complex working environment.

• Strong customer service skills and phone manner.

• Experience in participating in projects.

• Well-developed organisational skills and the capacity to be flexible in balancing priorities to meet/exceed customer needs.

• Polished and detail orientated in written communication articulated.

• Ability to prioritise multiple requests and effectively manage competing priorities.

• Demonstrated capacity for translating thought into action and being fully accountable for results.

• Proactive nature to ensure constant awareness and knowledge of changes in operation throughout the Ampol business.

• Takes pride in achieving success and creation of value for the business.

• Confident with complexity, contradiction, and change.


Skills & Knowledge


• Excellent networking and relationship management skills.

• Excellent communication skills. Ability to engage stakeholders and influence change, and to converse with both end-users and IT employees at all levels of the organisation.

• Ability to construct arguments, to challenge positively and constructively, and to distinguish requests from underlying needs.

• Excellent analytical and research skills, with the ability to collect and analyse complex material and data, and present in accessible form.

• Energetic self-starter, ability to quickly establish relationships with other project members and SMEs.

• Working knowledge of ITIL processes and their application.

• Able to make tough decisions in unknown or new areas.

• Ability to develop confidence, presence and influence within and outside function.

• Planning, prioritisation, organisational skills and the capacity to be flexible in balancing priorities to meet/exceed customer needs.
