HSES (Health, Safety, Environmental and Social) Manager

ABOUT THE ROLE

Health, Safety, Environmental and Social (HSES) management is a strategic priority for GuarantCo and PIDG.

The HSES Manager will support the HSES Director to manage HSES risk as it relates to both its people and portfolio.

The GuarantCo HSES risk management framework, which is part of the wider HSES Management System (MS), serves to support the HSES team to identify, assess and manage HSES risk of GuarantCo’s transactions, and deliver consistent and high quality HSES performance across the portfolio.

Although working within GMC, the GMC HSES function has an important and independent functional reporting line to PIDG HSES. This will allow the HSES function access to the PIDG-wide HSES strategy and culture, and to maintain a close, collaborative working relationship with the PIDG Group HSES Team.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Based in Singapore, with occasional overseas trips to South and Southeast Asia and Africa regions, support the GMC HSES Director with the implementation of and reporting against the GMC HSES Plan, and the PIDG Group HSES Management System and GMC HSES Risk Management Framework
  • Lead HSES screening and due diligence (DD) of new transactions, supporting the GMC Investment team to gain the necessary approvals, whilst adhering to the PIDG HSES policy and HSES standards
  • Lead portfolio monitoring, proactively identifying and following up on corrective actions, and being responsible for the upkeep of the portfolio corrective action tracker.
  • Lead HSES monitoring and assurance (M&A) site visits, developing the ToR, identifying material issues and risks, and developing corrective actions to address them.
  • Using the DD and M&A platform, build relationships with our clients, identify and delivery opportunities to support our clients achieve compliance.
  • Identify opportunities to add value (i.e. go beyond compliance), especially in the areas of safety, gender, biodiversity, climate and circular economy. Work with Technical Assistance (TA) to support any such initiatives.
  • Lead evaluation and reporting of portfolio HSES data. Support the group with development and maintenance of the HSES database. Identify and evaluate trends, and lead preparation of portfolio annual reviews and the Annual Monitoring Report.
  • Support the development of the HSES Management System, processes, standards and practices. Be a key driver of continuous improvement in HSES.
  • Support systems and processes that keep our people safe, including in the office and when travelling.
  • Proactively engage, contribute and lead capacity building exercises and events, including external PIDG Institute events and tailored client-specific trainings, as well as internal capacity building opportunities.
  • Create and champion a learning environment; take responsibility for coaching and the development of junior members of the team.
  • Be a visible HSES champion in everything that you do; find opportunities and platforms to promote HSES (internally and externally), lead by example and motivate others to become HSES champions, putting safety as a central value and stimulating high levels of HSES management and performance.
  • Drive and sustain GMC’s culture, proactively and visibly support equity and diversity, contribute materially to making GMC the best place to work for all.
  • Any other reasonable duties as may be assigned by GMC from time to time.

CORE COMPETENCIES / SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Technical

Essential

  • A degree in a science, engineering, or equivalent subject.
  • Ability to travel (Africa, South Asia / South East Asia).
  • Practical experience leading on a range of HSES issues in a variety of sectors.
  • Practical experience leading HSES due diligence and/or Environmental and Social Impact Assessments and/or Occupational Health and Safety within emerging and frontier markets.
  • Strong knowledge of IFC Performance Standards and other GIIP (good international industry practice).
  • Specific training and/or experience in circular economy.
  • Specific experience in HSES aspects of gender, climate, biodiversity, child/modern slavery, supply chain, human rights, resettlement.
  • A good understanding of legal documentation as it relates to HSES.
  • Practical experience in using biodiversity screening tools (e.g. IBAT), physical climate risk screening tools (e.g. Moody’s) and gender screening tools (e.g. Equilo).

Desirable

  • A postgraduate degree / qualification in an HSES science or other relevant discipline.
  • Accident investigation experience.
