A*STAR Infectious Diseases Labs (A*STAR ID Labs) is seeking for Research Officers to join us in our mission to be a leading centre of infectious diseases research. A*STAR ID Labs aims to develop a cohesive A*STAR response to drive and deliver translational infectious diseases research to better health and economic outcomes.

The laboratory headed by Dr. Marco Vignuzzi is leading cutting edge virology and antiviral and vaccine therapies. We are seeking a fast learner who can participate in multiple projects in the lab.

Job Description:

• Perform virological assays in cell culture for a wide variety of RNA pathogens, including chikungunya virus, Zika virus, dengue viruses, enteroviruses, influenza virus
• Work with mouse infection models to test antiviral therapies
• Conduct laboratory experiments in antiviral drug testing and perform data analysis for industry/research collaboration projects
• Perform meticulous recordkeeping and able to draft delivery report to industrial partners
• Oversee daily laboratory activities and help manage the lab’s routine admin duties
• Help new students and postdocs settle into the lab and transfer techniques to them
• Ensure safe technical practices and procedures
• Participate in the scientific discussions and brain-stormings of the lab
• Participate in presenting lab work in internal and external meetings

Job Requirements

• Bachelor Degree in Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Life Sciences, Biological Sciences, Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, Immunology, or related field.
• 2 or more years of solid experimental experience
• Ability to work in molecular biology and in cell culture
• Experience with BSL-2 pathogens, and cell culture will be an asset
• General lab skills in molecular biology (cloning, PCR, RNA and DNA methods)
• Highly motivated and able to work independently and multitask
• Team player with good interpersonal skills
• Good spoken and written communication skills
• A strong desire to constantly learn and acquire new skills

Justification Request:

The successful candidate will join the Data Management Group at the Bioinformatics Institute (BII) within the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). The Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI), Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model (CDM) is the national data standardisation framework adopted by Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) for real world evidence studies. This is a functional role that combines data management and data science skills for OMOP data curation & data analytics of national strategic research datasets.

Job Summary:

Support with the data curation and data analytics of national strategic research datasets based on OHDSI OMOP framework (multi-modal data integration, data cleaning, data curation, data quality assessments and data analytics) - https://www.ohdsi.org/

Job Responsibilities:

- Implementation of OHDSI OMOP framework across the national strategic research datasets such as the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) cohort study, https://gustodatavault.sg/omop/
- Develop and implement data management strategies for standard Common Data Model, vocabulary/ontology, mapping tools, methods and documentation.
- Develop and implement proactive quality control audits/quality management plans across datasets to ensure data mapping accuracies and completeness.
- Generate comprehensive reports and visualisation dashboards to effectively communicate data insights to stakeholders, including investigators, physicians and regulatory bodies.

Job Requirements:

- A Bachelor/Master Degree in Public Health, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science of related field.
- Good programming skills (Python, R).
- Knowledge/experience on Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Good Clinical Data Management Practices (GCDMP) guidelines, OHDSI OMOP Common Data Model and regulatory data submissions.
- Good team player and communication skills for collaborative research.

The Research Officer will oversee the progress of the research study under the supervision of the Principal investigator. They will perform a variety of research activities which include planning and execution of experiments for functional validation, leading up to a scientific publication.

Main Duties:

1. Tissue Logistics

• Tracking of biological samples received in the lab pertaining to the study
• Collection of patient samples (FFPE, Tissue, WBC,DNA or RNA) from Pathology
• DNA/RNA extraction from frozen tissue or FFPE
• Submission of DNA/RNA samples to external sequencing partner

2. Cell culture

• Generation of cell line and/or organoids from tissue collected from the study
• Maintenance of these cell lines and/or organoids in culture

3. Perform tasks and support all aspects of the research project

• Performing literature reviews when required
• Plan and execute experiments for functional validation
• Conduct accurate monitoring, documenting and reporting of experimental result and research findings
• Evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare oral presentations/scientific manuscripts/ literature for publication

4.Perform other related duties

• Laboratory upkeep and maintenance

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s/Master of Science degree in related technical discipline (biology, cell biology, biomedical science, biochemistry or molecular biology)
• Experience working in a clinical or academic environment
• Strong technical/wet lab skills
• Team player with excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently
• Independent worker, possess initiative to complete tasks and projects assigned
• Highly motivated to learn new techniques and not afraid to ask if unsure
• Able to undertake independent research progressively

What you’ll do:

• Perform data analysis, image processing and modelling on novel ocular imaging data;
• Compile data, summarize and interpret results of the analysis in reports and journal articles;
• Conduct research within SERI in line with its research strategy and under the direction and supervision of the Principal Investigators and Collaborators;
• Actively participate in these research projects in a team-based, cross-functional research environment.

What you'll need to have:

• Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Science or related discipline;
• Possess good programming and image processing skills (e.g. MATLAB, Python);
• Previous experience in medical image analysis and software development;
• Able to work independently, as well as in a team-based, cross-functional research team.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and capable full-time Research Officer for the above project, a large-scale project on childhood development, family, and population issues in Singapore. The RO will assist in survey operations, data management and analysis, literature review, writing of reports and administrative support.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (preferably Honours) or equivalent in statistics or social sciences
• Experience in conducting research such as an honours thesis or involvement in a research project
• Strong writing skills
• Strong quantitative research skills. A good grasp of data analytic software such as SPSS, STATA, or R

Terms and Conditions
