Project Title:

Scalable Process Development for Protein Extraction from Highly Concentrated Microalgae Broths

• Abstract:

The project Proteins4Singapore aims to address Singapore's aspiration to identify domestically grown protein-rich raw materials for the production of novel foods. Proteins4Singapore microalgae which can be grown in highly urbanized environments.

In this master’s/intern project, we will focus on processing microalgae to extract fractions high in protein from concentrated biomass slurries. To facilitate industrial-scale implementation, considerations for scalability and cost-effectiveness are paramount. The initial phase involves establishing a mechanical processing method for microalgae.

Further, microalgae cultures will undergo cross-flow filtration and continuous centrifugation for dewatering. To assess the impact of viscosity on the process, viscosity, and flow index values will be determined. For disruption, high-pressure homogenization will be used on differently concentrated microalgae solutions. The goal is to determine the maximum solid load of microalgae and assess disruption efficiency with increased solid loads.

Following the disruption, debris will be separated from soluble proteins through centrifugation and cross-flow filtration. Subsequently, these solutions will be separated from potential valuable co-products, while monitoring protein stability in highly concentrated solutions. Finally, cost efficiency and economic aspects will be evaluated.

Nested at the NUS Department of Psychological Medicine, the Mind Science Centre (MSC) is a faculty-volunteer collaborative partnership. MSC undertakes mental health research across the age continuum to translate outcomes into effective, scalable interventions in Singaporean and Asian communities.

The position provides an opportunity to engage with and conduct translational mental health research concerning children, adolescents and emerging adults. The Youth Epidemiology and Resilience (YEAR) Study is a nationwide epidemiology study that aims to survey the mental health status and resilience of Singaporean adolescents aged 10-18 years old. Job Description

• Assist the Principal Investigator in submitting study notifications to the NHG Domain Specific Review Board (DSRB) or Institutional Review Board (IRB) for ethics review
• Attend project-related initiation, close-up and other project related meetings
• Conduct literature reviews to inform the planning of research activities

Project Overview

The Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) Centre invites applications for Postdoctoral Associate positions in the area of crystallization science and particle engineering. The successful candidate will be expected to work on the design and engineering of advanced microparticle-based pharmaceutical drug products comprising soft (polymer/hydrogel) matrices containing crystalline drug particles, typically made using microfluidic methods. We are looking for a wet-lab Research Assistant, who has experience in working with mice models and performing molecular and cellular experiments to study cardio/pulmonary/kidney and immune-fibrotic traits, with the aim of deciphering the primary genetic factors and regulatory networks underlying cardio-metabolic diseases. The position will be for a period of 2 years, with possibility of renewal depending on the candidate’s work performance and contribution to the project .

The selected candidate will provide expertise in conducting research activities within the overall scope of the research project, including but not limited to the following:

• Maintain animal colonies, breeding, preparing animals for surgery or intravenous injection, obtaining samples and measurements, administering medicine and monitoring the animal’s environment (i.e. mice cages).

Research Associate positions are available in the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, National University of Singapore, to support the Principal Investigator Assistant Professor Wang Yi in research projects in the areas of health economics, early health technology assessment and medical innovation development.

The research team works on the crossroads of health economics and medical innovation development. We work on diverse projects including theoretical framework development, method development, and empirical works in collaboration with clinicians, medical innovators, and decision makers.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform research administration, conduct research, communication with collaborators, disseminate research findings, and participation in capacity building through conducting workshops for local and regional participants.
