Our headquarter hosts Europe’s largest energy trading floor, complementing additional sites in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and America.

Our Sales Unit Commodity Solutions has a growing large customer base. Within Commodity Solutions Germany & BeNeLux the Commodity Flow Desk Global (CFD) provides wholesale market access to different client sectors. The CFD acts as a cross-commodity hub for external counterparties with relevant exposures in Power, Gas, Emission Certificates and derivative hedging products.

For the growth of our financial and physical downstream Sales Trading activities in the Asia-Pacific region (APAC), we are looking to explore new OTC opportunities in close alignment with our existing trading and renewables activities.

• You become part of the CFD team which is responsible for physical and financial hedging OTC-transactions with a focus on power (green as well as grey), gas, oil, coal and green certificates (e.g. NFCs, EUAs and VERs) with energy companies, utilities and companies active in the industrial and logistic sector across APAC
• Within the team you drive the APAC growth initiative of the CFD to build and to shape a new business, this includes establishing and managing client relationships as well as performing deal execution supported by the CFD team based in Essen
• Groundwork for the required set-up with Legal, Compliance and Tax:Investigating and assessing the business and customer potential
  Defining the required product set up and launching a focused reconnaissance wave working hand in hand with the CFD in Essen in APAC
  Close collaboration with internal stakeholders such as our RWEST trading desksas well as business support functions
• Managing and trading your own CFD sales trading book with the newly established client relationships as well as business processes in APAC

Your powerful skills

• You have a university degree in business, engineering, project management or equivalent
• You have profound experience in project development as well as energy sales trading gained from previous work experience in the banking, utility or energy trading sector (industry as well)
• You understand the risk management approach of different customer sectors and aggregators in energy commodities such as gas, certificates (NFCs, EUAs, VERs) and power in APAC
• You have the ability to collaborate closely with colleagues across the RWE business and multiple stakeholders to achieve a goal and meet tight deadlines – ranging from different RWE OpCos, project teams to Economic Evaluations
• You are a pro-active and motivated individual who displays a high level of initiative with a keen interest in building a business
• You are looking to take on new challenges, are comfortable with operating independently or in a team and demonstrate complex thinking skills, including both analytical and conceptual in solving problems
• You have excellent communication skills with the ability to transfer knowledge between analysis and decision makers in other departments with an interdisciplinary approach in English
• You have the flexibility and mobility needed to travel to multiple locations

About the role

The Asia-Pacific Trading Desk consists of a multitude of different, mainly interlinked, trading desks including Power, Fuels, Steel and Petrochemical Complex teams in Singapore, as well as trading teams situated in China, Japan and Indonesia looking after domestic products in the respective countries.

The role will sit in the Power Complex team based in Singapore. We are a growing team diversifying across Asia Pacific power and carbon markets.

The main focus of the work will be on Japan and Australia power, but there is the option to explore related energy products or new markets within the region.

• Develop fundamental analysis and models to support Japan power trading activities.
• Ultimately, you will connect insights from analysis to drive commercial impact via contributions to trading strategies.
• Maintain the infrastructure, flow and visualisations of Australia and Japan cost stack models (currently PLEXOS).
• Share insights of cost stack model with traders and wider stakeholders within the business.

Job requirements and experience

About the role

The role will sit in the Fuels Complex team. We are an established team who have traded thermal coal in the Pacific for over ten years, we are looking for an analyst to improve and add to our current capabilities.

The main focus of the work will be on thermal coal but there is the option to explore related energy products within the region.

• With resources at hand, you will construct fundamental analysis around commodities and their markets, linking relevant commodities across key regions globally
• Ultimately, you will connect insights from analysis to drive commercial impact via contributions to trading strategies.
• You will have access to a wide range of analysis tools and in-house database

As an Asian Energy Analyst, you possess a comprehensive understanding of the supply and demand dynamics in major Asian power markets. Your expertise encompasses power demand drivers and detailed insights into both conventional and renewable power generation. You will constantly monitor and assess news and regulations related to the Asian power industry, evaluating their impacts through economic considerations and power stack modeling.

Your timely and high-quality analyses enhance our existing analytical framework on Asian power markets and contribute directly to our trading decisions. You regularly communicate findings to traders and our analyst team, optimizing results and identifying opportunities for improvements.

In particular, your responsibilities include:

• Conducting in-depth analyses of supply (e.g., conventional and renewable generation) and demand factors (e.g., demand growth and load shape), while building and maintaining fuel stack models to understand marginal power prices and fuel-switching dynamics.
• Collecting data on existing and future supply-demand balances for power markets in China, South Korea, Australia, and Japan.
• Monitoring news flows and regulatory policy changes, and analyzing their impacts on the power and fuel markets.
• Sourcing data from various sources and formats, and collaborating with the market data team to ensure accurate integration into our processes.
• Demonstrating expertise in programming, a thorough understanding of the data processing pipeline, and the ability to implement automated solutions to optimize data handling and analysis tasks.
• Applying advanced modeling techniques and data science methodologies to analyze large datasets, develop predictive models, optimize trading strategies, enhance analytical accuracy, and support data-driven decision-making.

Competencies/Skills Required:

• Working knowledge of one or more Asian power markets (China, Japan, South Korea, Australia) and other commodities in the energy sector (e.g., coal, gas).
• Relevant experience in fundamental modeling within an energy trading environment utilizing expert software for energy market modeling and simulation (e.g. PLEXOS).
• A university degree in Economics, Finance, Energy, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field.
• Experience working with large datasets and interfacing with databases.
• Strong economic understanding combined with robust quantitative and analytical skills,
• Proven expertise in programming and model development to deliver high-quality analyses and develop well-structured code that enhances analytical and trading activities (e.g., Python, R, SQL).
• Excellent IT skills in the MS Windows environment.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Ability to transfer knowledge between analysis and trading with an interdisciplinary approach.
• Language skills: fluent in English; proficiency in Mandarin, Japanese, or Korean is advantageous.

As the business expands, we need a strong Market Risk team in Singapore to partner with the traders and ensure the resilience and continued success of our business in the whole Asia-Pacific region.
