Research Fellow in Soft Materials Science (Biophysical Characterisation of Food Textures)

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Fellow to join our dynamic research team focusing on the biophysical characterisation of food textures and their molecular building blocks. As part of the Proteins4Singapore project, the Research Fellow will contribute to innovative methodologies for nano- and micro- scale structural characterization of complex soft matter. This position plays a critical role in advancing sustainable protein solutions for urban environments through interdisciplinary collaboration, drawing expertise from physical chemistry, food science, and soft matter physics. This is a fixed term contract until March 2027.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct experimental studies on protein hydration, emulsification, gelation, and phase separation in food systems.
• Perform experimental work related to nano- and micro- structuring, utilizing advanced biophysical characterization techniques such as X-ray, neutron, and light scattering, as well as other spectroscopic and imaging methods.
• Develop and apply new methods for studying nanoscale wetting, protein hydrophobicity, and viscoelastic properties of complex food textures using acoustic and scanning probe techniques.

The Climate Transformation Programme (CTP) aims to develop, inspire and accelerate knowledge-based solutions and educate future leaders to establish the stable climate and environment necessary for resilient, just, and sustainable Southeast Asian societies. CTP will generate knowledge and innovation across disciplines including climate and Earth science, ecology, materials science, artificial intelligence, humanities, social sciences, the arts, finance, health, and engineering. It will also translate state-of-the-art scientific results into real world solutions for Singapore and transfer these solutions to Southeast Asia (SEA) and beyond. As part of this programme, Cross Cutting Theme 2: Satellite Remote Sensing will map and monitor the impact and solutions of climate change in Southeast Asia region.

The Earth Observatory of Singapore – Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS) at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore invites applications for a Research Associate / Engineer II to support CTP Cross Cutting Theme 2 (Satellite Remote Sensing). The EOS-RS teams’ research covers SAR, multi/hyper-spectral remote sensing, LiDAR, and GNSS data for disaster response and hazard monitoring for earthquakes, volcanoes, and impacts of climate change.

EOS is a University Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University that conducts fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies. EOS-RS and CTP welcomes applications, from qualified candidates who have interests and expertise relevant to the use of remote sensing for mapping, monitoring, and understanding the causes and effects of climate change, for the Research Associate position . We are particularly interested in candidates who have expertise in analysing and interpreting satellite remote sensing data from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and multi/hyper-spectral sensors for measuring ground deformation, mapping surface changes due to disaster events, and mapping ocean colours and ocean topography for carbon flux estimates. We are also interested in candidates who have experience applying machine learning to InSAR and other remote sensing observations.

The successful candidate will be part of the large and interdisciplinary research teams at EOS, the Asian School of the Environment (ASE), and the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), helping to develop algorithms and systems for disaster mapping and climate change in collaboration with space industries and responding agencies around the world. They will collaborate with the geodesy group and many other groups at EOS/ASE.

Key Responsibilities:

• Analyse and interpret remote sensing data to understand natural hazards/disasters across Southeast Asia
• Develop and conduct research projects both independently and in a team
• Write up research results for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present results at conferences
• Help to mentor and collaborate with Research Assistants/Associates

Job Requirements:

• Master’s degree in Earth science, geophysics, geodesy, physics, civil/electrical engineering, natural hazards, computer vision, machine learning, image processing, deep learning, or a related field.
• Demonstrated expertise in processing SAR data (with open-source tools such as ISCE or GMTSAR) for surface deformation measurement and change mapping.
• Strong track record of publishing research relevant to the position in Tier 1 journals
• Excellent English language and communication skills is essential to conduct research
• Independence in research direction and team spirit
• Ability to write code using Python or MATLAB
• Ability in creating intellectual value

Job Description

• Carry out full time supervision for construction of structural works in accordance to BCA approved structural drawings in compliance to Building and Control Act and regulations
• Check that requirements of specifications in regards to materials and workmanship are complied with the project specifications by the Builders. Ensure high quality control for all civil and structural as well as architectural works to be carried . This includes sample tests for materials and workmanship etc

• Check architectural and ID works and intent of design details are followed. To notify Architect of any design intent conflicts and quality variations, illegal works.
