Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for the position of Research Assistant for the project entitled “Characterisation of C6orf15 as a marker for epithelial mesenchymal transition and lymph node metastasis in colorectal cancer” within the Department of Surgery, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Job Description

Main duties and responsibilities

The RA will receive regular direct supervision by the PI. While prior experience working in a laboratory environment would be valuable for this position, this is not critical, as specific molecular biology techniques will be taught by the PI. The RA must however have an interest in the molecular underpinnings of cancer, and have an inquisitive mind and a can-do personality.

The responsibilities of the RA will be to:

1. Oversee the experiments relating to the project;
2. Keep an accurate and contemporaneous log of the experimental procedures attempted as part of the project;

The MNNDL group at NUS studies the human neural bases of cognitive functions and the associated vulnerability patterns in aging and neuropsychiatric disorders using multimodal neuroimaging and psychophysical techniques. We are interested in the large-scale brain structural and functional networks in healthy developing and aging brain and symptoms-related changes in diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders and psychosis. Statistical, computational, and machine learning methods are developed to analyze and fuse multimodal neuroimaging data. By integrating longitudinal behavior, neuroimaging, and genotype data, our long-term goal is to investigate the interactions among brain network dynamics, behavior, diseases, and genotypes to develop non-invasive biomarkers for early detection, differential diagnosis, progression monitoring, and treatment design.

Purpose of the post

The Research Assistant (RA) will work closely with, the Principal Investigator, lab members, and collaborators to ensure smooth operation of computing servers/storage, efficient database management, and successful completion of research projects in the lab.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The research assistant will support the effort in conducting cutting-edge neuroscience and machine learning research and development. He/she has the opportunity to learn state-of-the-art neuroimaging techniques, data collection and analysis, with healthy participants and patients with neuropsychiatric diseases. By feeding on food waste, fly larvae convert organic matter into compost fertilizer which can be used for high-tech vegetable farming, and into protein-rich feed for fish, chicken and other livestock.

We are currently seeking a motivated and dedicated lab technologist or research assistant to join our team. You will work with other research assistants to oversee the day-to-day operations of the BSF rearing facility and assist researchers and students with their projects. Applicants should be enthusiastic about environmental causes and food security, be comfortable handling insects and food waste, and be comfortable confronting and solving challenges independently.

This position involves working with fresh food waste/scraps, insect larvae and adult flies daily. On-the-job training is provided. Alongside your colleagues, you will be tasked with the following:

● Collecting and preparing food waste for the larvae
● Maintenance of insect cages and breeding facilities

The successful candidate will assist the funded research project entitled “Digital Information Resilience: Restoring Trust and Nudging Behaviours in Digitalisation”. The candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of scholars based in Singapore to advance research and knowledge on digital information resilience. The project aims to identify and measure digital information resilience for digital readiness, inclusion and safety based on an original indicator framework.

The successful candidate will assist to develop new indicators for measuring digital information resilience. They will conduct interviews, facilitate focus groups, develop and implement surveys, and code the data-sets using qualitative and quantitative research methods. They will also be required to support project management, research admin and deliverables such as reports/journal articles, workshops and webinars.

Qualifications

• At least a PhD or equivalent in the Social Sciences/Humanities, and demonstrated research experience in communications and media studies, including digital media policy and regulation.

The Experimental Marine Ecology Laboratory (EMEL) within the Department of Biological Sciences at the National University of Singapore is seeking to appoint two Research Assistants to work on a major new project “Shore Protection with Integrated Nature-based Solutions—Eco (SPINS-Eco)”. This interdisciplinary research aims to determine the optimal conditions for mangrove, seagrass, coral, and macroalgal establishment and growth within hybrid coastal protection systems in Singapore.

The main responsibilities of the position include:
• Assist in designing and executing protocols to quantify biophysical conditions of both modified and natural tropical coastal habitats
• Carry out intertidal and subtidal biodiversity surveys
• Conduct growth and stress experiments
• Coordinate with sister projects: “SPINS-Hydro” and “SPINS-Meta”
• Prepare research manuscripts, reports, and presentations
• Assist in administrative work to support the project

Qualifications

Applicants should have completed a bachelor’s degree in life sciences, marine biology, ecology, geography, environmental studies, or other similar discipline.
