Project Title:

Scalable Process Development for Protein Extraction from Highly Concentrated Microalgae Broths

• Abstract:

The project Proteins4Singapore aims to address Singapore's aspiration to identify domestically grown protein-rich raw materials for the production of novel foods. Proteins4Singapore microalgae which can be grown in highly urbanized environments.

In this master’s/intern project, we will focus on processing microalgae to extract fractions high in protein from concentrated biomass slurries. To facilitate industrial-scale implementation, considerations for scalability and cost-effectiveness are paramount. The initial phase involves establishing a mechanical processing method for microalgae.

Further, microalgae cultures will undergo cross-flow filtration and continuous centrifugation for dewatering. To assess the impact of viscosity on the process, viscosity, and flow index values will be determined. For disruption, high-pressure homogenization will be used on differently concentrated microalgae solutions.
