Antimicrobial drug resistance is a growing an alarming problem that poses serious challenges to the existing public health infrastructure of Singapore and of the rest of the world. Microbial pathogens are becoming more and more difficult to treat as they steadily gain partial and full resistance to last-line antibiotics.

Recalcitrant infections can add enormous costs and strains to health care systems that are already stressed.
