Main duties and responsibilities

The Research Fellow (RF) will be responsible to, and work closely with, the Principal Investigator (PI) and study team members to successfully deliver research outcomes pursued in several nationally funded projects:

Ischaemic stroke and cardiovascular diseases, focused on biomarker discovery and validation using preclinical vascular and animal models. A key focus of the work is to understand the reasons why strokes occur and how to identify high-risk individuals for more intensive interventions. This work leverages on a well-phenotyped repository of samples from stroke patients who have been meticulously characterized by whole-exome sequencing, RNA-seq and proteomics and outcomes collected in patients who were followed for more than 10 years.

HYCOMBS PROJECT

HYCOMBS: Hydrogen and Ammonia Combustion in Singapore

In the future, Singapore may be importing renewable energy in the form of hydrogen (H2) or ammonia (NH3). These zero-carbon fuels will require the development of new gas turbines (GTs) and internal combustion engines (ICE) used in power generation, aviation, and maritime propulsion.

This project focuses on the combustion fundamentals of hydrogen, ammonia, their blends, and their blends with hydrocarbon fuels. The knowledge acquired in HYCOMBS will enable the penetration of zero-carbon fuels in the Singapore energy system and this will benefit Singaporean industries and residents.

DESCRIPTION

The HYCOMB project aims to develop a deeper understanding of hydrogen/ammonia combustion phenomena and improve the efficiency, stability, and environmental sustainability of gas turbines and internal combustion engines. As a Postdoctoral Researcher in WP2.1, you will play a key role in deploying advanced diagnostics to study laminar H2/NH3 flames, a crucial step towards understanding combustion instability and pollutant formation.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and operate a burner for laminar flame experiments, compatible with high-frequency diagnostics
• Conduct experiments on steady and pulsated laminar H2/NH3 flames using spontaneous emission of radicals (OH*, NH*) and laser absorption spectroscopy of stable species (NH3, H2O, N2O)
• Modulate injection conditions to induce controlled fluctuations of velocity, which will drive the oscillation of heat release, pollutant formation, and other quantities of interest
• Measure local flow conditions using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to correlate flame behavior with flow strain
• Collaborate with other partners to implement laser absorption spectroscopy in other rigs and validate kinetic schemes and simulations (WP1)

Led by experts from NUS and research institutes in Singapore, the Centre aims to drive global food security and accelerate regional innovation. The focus will be on microalgae research and biomass fermentation, to produce high-quality, affordable, and sustainable microbial proteins from microalgae and biomass fermentation that can be further developed into cultured meat and plant-based protein hybrids. Microbial proteins will be cultivated through fermentation and processed using emerging bio-physical techniques for effective biotransformation, to improve digestibility, flavour, and nutritional profile. As a research fellow, you will lead projects to optimise microalgae cultivation processes and apply bio-physical techniques to improve nutritional and organoleptic properties. Appointments will be initially made on a 1-year contract, renewable for up to 5 years.

Responsibilities:
- Conduct research activities in accordance with the Centre objectives involving but not limited to:
i. Conversion of industrial food side-streams into media suitable for microalgae cultivation.
ii. Microalgae cultivations in flask and benchtop bioreactors under batch, fed batch, or continuous modes.

The successful candidate will work with Associate Professor John S. Ascher on environmental modeling of mosquito vectors and stinging wasps and bees and other insects of importance for public and environmental health under the CNRS@CREATE, SPACE project.

Working with the appointment PI to validate as fit for use an existing specimen and community science dataset of insects of importance for public and environmental health, especially mosquitoes and stinging wasps.
