Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute, NTU is looking for a Research Fellow with expertise in heterogeneous catalysis to develop improved catalyst formulations for conversion of plastic waste into carbon nanotubes and hydrogen.

The project is funded by National Environment Agency, Singapore to address one of the largest problems in waste management – the problem of plastic waste pollution. A significant fraction of plastic waste has substandard quality for mechanical and chemical recycling even after sorting and cleaning. The Research Fellow will use pyrolysis-chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology for converting these plastic waste streams (specifically, contaminated and rejected plastics) into multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and hydrogen. The role of Research Fellow is to develop catalysts that will allow to reduce catalyst cost and increase carbon nanotubes yield to make the process more economically viable.

Key Responsibilities:

Requirements and Skills

• Master's or Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science, information technology, engineering, or related field.
• Strong research background in AI, ML, and/or SE with a solid publication record in A and A* level conferences/journals. Minimum of 2 publications in top-tier conferences or journals.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a research setting.
• Excellent communication skills for conveying complex technical concepts.
• Experience in developing tools or frameworks that utilize AI/ML to enhance software development processes.
• Experience with DevOps tooling, such as Kubernetes, Docker, and Ansible.
• Experience with general-purpose languages, such as Java, C#, C/C++, Python, Rust
• Familiarity with techniques for automated code generation, program verification, program synthesis, or software testing using AI/ML.
• Strong knowledge in state-of-the-art research in ML for Software engineering, such as experience in Prompt Engineering, Agentic Systems, Chain of Thought applications

Job Description

The successful candidate will work with Prof HUANG DEJIAN on Prolamin passed scaffold under a project on Sustainable Production of Cultivated Meat: Media, Scaffolds and Bioprocess.

The main responsibilities of the position include:

1. Coordinate activity of progress of sub-projects of this grant funded by government (Singapore Food Agency).
2. Lead development of plant proteins as new edible biomaterials for scaffold fabrication and coating materials to improve cyto-affinities.
3. Write progress reports of the grant.
4. Write invention disclosures.
5. Write manuscripts for publication.
6. Write grant proposals related to the plant protein work.
7. Supervise junior students.

Qualifications

Qualifications / Discipline:

• PhD degree majoring in Food Science and Technology or closely related fields.

Skills:

• Skilled at extraction of plant proteins and natural products, Food analysis methods such as HPLC, SDS-PAGE, proximate analysis, cell culture skills, imaging, molecular biology experimental skills. Good communication skills in writing and spoken English. Excellent skills in scientific writing including creative graphic preparation.

Experience:

• 0 -3 years of working experience.
