In particular, peer networks play a significant role in influencing students’ behavior, dispositions, well-being, and academic performance, especially during secondary school years. Peer networks provide a context for knowledge sharing, which guides the formation of self-identity and emergence of group norms. The proposed study is a longitudinal investigation aiming to examine the interplay among friendship network dynamics and academic, motivational and socio-emotional outcomes of students attending mixed-ability (i.e., with different academic achievement levels) or similar-ability (i.e., with similar academic achievement levels) form classes. In particular, the proposed study aims to examine (1) how the students’ peer relationships change over four years in secondary school; (2) how such changes in peer relationships are associated with changes in student outcomes; and (3) how students facing the risk of social isolation can be supported. The study is framed in a unique situation that allows the comparison of peer relationships and related outcomes of two groups of students: those from schools piloting a new education policy initiative that no longer segregates students into different academic courses and provides in-class opportunities for cross-ability interactions and those from schools that are streaming students into different academic courses and placing students with similar abilities and strengths (i.e., same academic course) in the same class. Job Description

The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with Asst. Prof. Patrick Rebentrost in the intersection of quantum algorithms and optimization, machine learning and/or finance. Sample topics include quantum algorithms for problems in supervised and unsupervised machine learning, algorithmic learning theory, and online learning, and quantum algorithms for financial problems such as portfolio optimization, pricing of financial derivatives, and hedging. The job will include the development of quantum algorithms in these areas, with provable quantum advantages and provable guarantees, when possible, in fault-tolerant models of quantum computation. The job will also include the development of algorithms that are easier to execute on available hardware such as variational and post-variational methods and quantum approximate optimization. Furthermore, the aim is to provide hardware implementations on available devices, comparisons between available hardware providers, and classical simulations of the quantum algorithms. For this purpose, the successful applicant will be granted significant independence concerning their research and receive generous travel funding. They will be expected to contribute to the group, for example by co-supervising student projects and assisting with outreach activities.

Qualifications

• Strong track-record working on technical aspects of quantum algorithms and/or quantum information. Strong candidates with proven expertise in other aspects of quantum computing such as quantum machine learning, near-term quantum algorithms, quantum approximate optimization are encouraged to apply.
