The Middle School Head of English, in collaboration with the Middle School Vice Principal (Academic), the Director of Teaching and Learning, and Middle School Principal leads the teaching and learning of English for all Middle School students. Leadership & Management

1. Take overall responsibility for the quality and ongoing development of provision within the department, including teaching and learning, curriculum documentation, extracurricular enrichment, and support for university applications.

UWCSEA Dover has a vacancy for August 2025 for a Teacher of Middle School Learning Support with a possible additional responsibility of Head of Middle School Learning Support.

The Middle School Learning Support team focuses on fostering an inclusive environment that prioritises a student-centred and strength-based approach. UWCSEA are in the initial phases of implementing a tiered support model, and this role involves collaborating with the team around the child to ensure all students can thrive within the UWCSEA learning programme. The successful candidate will be required to have an understanding of tiered support structures and systems within large and dynamic educational organisations. Relevant qualifications that support students with learning differences are required.

For the Head position, the ideal candidate should have relevant leadership experience. They must also be knowledgeable about the unique challenges Middle School students experience and implement effective support and systems to ensure continuity of care as students’ transition from Primary School and then to High School.

They will be responsible for the pedagogical leadership of the English curriculum, and for ensuring that teaching excellence is embedded throughout all Key Stages. In August 2024, the Senior School at Brighton College (Singapore) will open with Years 7, 8 and 9. The Head of English will teach across all Key Stage 3 year groups, and will be expected to lead the teaching and learning at IGCSE and beyond as the school expands upwards from August 2025. Therefore, they will be able to demonstrate a strong track record of delivering top academic results at GCSE/IGCSE and A-level in previous roles.

Key Responsibilities

• Take responsibility for the teaching, progress and attainment of all pupils in Years 7 to 9 from August 2024, and for all other senior year groups in the following years.
• Lead on all aspects of curriculum planning and delivery, including preparation for the first IGCSE Year 10 cohort starting in August 2025.
• Promote excellence, creativity and innovation in all areas of the English curriculum.
• Demonstrate commitment to continuous professional development.
• Lead on all aspects of assessment, tracking and reporting for English.
• Demonstrate the experience and ability to teach English Language and Literature across all relevant Key Stages (including IGCSE/GCSE and A-level).
• Act as an outstanding classroom practitioner, with the ability to lead by example.
• Devise and implement rigorous self-evaluation processes.
• Devise and oversee the department’s extension and enrichment programme.
• Demonstrate the experience and expertise needed to support pupils in future years with applications to leading universities, including Oxford and Cambridge and other world-class universities.
• Work closely with the Heads of EAL and AEN to develop pathways for pupils requiring additional support.
• Work with the Prep School middle and senior leaders to manage a smooth transition from Year 6 to Year 7.
• Develop the required curriculum and department documentation, both for current and prospective parents.
• Work with the Head of Admissions on the assessment of English levels at entry to the Senior School.
• Contribute to the highest standards of safeguarding and to the school’s pastoral system, acting as a tutor for a Senior School year group.
• Contribute to the co-curricular life of the school.
• Any other reasonable management request.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in English, with PGCE or equivalent.
• Expert knowledge or experience of successfully delivering GCSEs/IGCSEs and A-level.
• Proven track record of middle leadership (preferred but not essential).
• International experience (preferred but not essential)
• Superb writing and speaking abilities.

• An international outlook and understanding of working in diverse environments.
