Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for a Research Associate position in the Department of Synthetic Biology Translational Research Program, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Appointments will be on a 1-year contract in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

Purpose of the post

The Research Associate (RAssoc) will be working closely with the Principal Investigator and a team of researchers on bioprocessing and downstream process development. The RAssoc’s principal role will be to assist in method development and process optimization for research projects requiring bacterial and yeast fermentation as well as provide technical support and training to laboratory users.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Associate is expected to:

1. Design and execute fermentation experiments to optimize the production of target compounds/proteins.
2. Develop and scale-up bioprocesses for the cultivation of microbial strains (bacterial, conventional and non-conventional yeasts) from benchtop to pilot scale fermentation.
3. Conduct process optimization studies to improve fermentation performance, yield, and productivity.

ADVANCE-ID is jointly funded by the Wellcome Trust and Singapore institutions including the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. The vision of the Network is to improve public health by developing the clinical evidence base for the prevention and treatment of drug-resistant infections. Its mission is to build and sustain a strategic clinical research network focussed on most efficiently delivering locally relevant interventions for drug-resistant infections.

The Network aims to improve and strengthen clinical research capabilities in the region by acting as a platform to develop good principles and practices. It will stabilise capacity and capabilities to mitigate inefficiencies in trial start-up phase and loss of skillset following study closure, as in typical trial setup. The Network will continuously develop its capabilities, quality and efficiency by learning from and collaborating with other clinical trial networks.

In the long term, the Network aims to support broader infectious disease studies by expanding geographically beyond its original starting point in South East Asia and collaborating with other networks around the world. The Senior Research Fellow/Research Fellow will be a core member of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability’s research team. Research tasks include working on the Centre for Water Policy’s cutting-edge work on urban water policy and governance, as well as our burgeoning Centre on Climate and Energy. The candidate will lead policy-relevant research projects, take responsibility for project and grant management, and contribute to stakeholder liaison and outreach of the Institute. We are especially looking for candidates who hold a high level of policy research competence in Applied Economics, Public Policy, Sociology, Political Science, Environmental Science or in a related field. In particular, candidates should have demonstrable interest, work, and/or research experience on the policy and governance aspects of water, climate and energy. All candidates should have a strong willingness to contribute to IES’s mission and to engage with new topics and research tools.

Responsibilities:

• Design, implement and lead research projects under IES’s various research programmes
• Prepare high quality research papers on topics related to IES’s core research themes suitable for publication in high-tier academic journals
• Contribute to grant and institute-level reporting requirements and funding proposals/applications
• Provide support for IES’s events and outreach activities
• Engage with policy and research communities in Singapore, Asia, and around the world

Requirements

• PhD in Applied Economics, Public Policy, Sociology, Political Science, Environmental Science or in a related field.
• Excellent analytical skills with knowledge of:- big data analytics, economics, econometrics, laboratory/field experiments, game theory and/or agent-based modelling- anticipatory policy design and practice, including path dependency analysis
• Applied social science experience, including independently designing, conducting surveys and analysing its data
• Preference for those with good and relevant publication records / working papers
• Excellent verbal and written English
• Good time management skills and ability to multi-task effectively

Responsibilities:

• Develop new concepts and algorithms in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence for natural language processing with a focus on knowledge-graph approaches to address the data integrity issues, information extraction from user conversation data and dialog tree generation;
