Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Research Assistant to support pioneering research in molecular microbial ecology and infectious disease evolution under the guidance of A/Prof Yann Boucher at the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) – NTU. This position will focus on the ecology, evolution, and genomics of enteric bacterial pathogens, with an emphasis on understanding pathogen life cycles, adaptation, and survival in human and environmental reservoirs. The successful candidate will contribute to advancing culturomics approaches to the study of microbiomes and support the discovery of new bacterial species related to key pathogens such as Vibrio cholerae. This role will suit an individual passionate about microbiology, pathogen ecology, and experimental evolution.

Job Description

• Conduct laboratory-based research on the microbial ecology and evolution of enteric pathogens, with a focus on pathogen life cycles, antimicrobial resistance acquisition, and virulence factors.
• Assist in the isolation, characterization, and genomic analysis of bacterial species associated with the “cholerae clade” and other enteric pathogens.
• Support culturomics studies to examine microbial transmission dynamics between human and environmental systems.
• Collaborate with team members on experiments that investigate pathogen evolution over human timescales, particularly in response to environmental pressures and host interactions.
• Maintain detailed and accurate records of experiments, data collection, and data analysis using relevant software.
• Prepare research findings for publications, reports, and presentations, contributing to collaborative international projects.
• Daily lab management tasks such as inventory of supplies and samples, preparing culture media and solutions, autoclaving materials, ordering supplies and maintaining bacterial cultures and stocks

Requirements

• At least Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Epidemiology, or a related field.
• Prior experience in laboratory research, microbial ecology, or molecular genetics preferred.
• Proficiency in molecular techniques such as PCR, DNA extraction, sequencing, and bioinformatics software for genomic analysis.
• Strong data analysis skills and familiarity with microbial ecology or evolutionary biology concepts.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, able to prepare clear research documentation and contribute to team discussions.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Position Objective

The role of the Teaching Assistant is essentially to assist the Teachers in the delivery of the education program within the classroom and support the activities within and outside the classroom to ensure students are safe, happy and learning in a positive and nurturing environment.

Responsibilities

The job holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young person’s for whom they are responsible, or with whom they come into contact will be to adhered to and ensure compliance with the relevant Cognita Safeguarding; Child Protection Policy and Procedures at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the role, the job holder identifies any instance that a child is suffering or likely to suffer significant harm either at school or at home, they must report any concerns to the School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead or to the Head or indeed to the Cognita Regional Safeguarding Manager so that a referral can be made accordingly to the relevant third-party services.

Educational role:

• Working in close partnership with the class teacher to establish an appropriately child-centered learning environment for the children

• Participating fully in the preparation, planning and delivery of child-centered learning activities for the children in the class

• Under the direction of the class teacher, working with individuals and groups of children

• Under the direction of the teacher, helping to ensure that the classroom environment is well-managed, properly ordered and neatly presented

Extended professional role:

• Contributing towards the whole-school team spirit by taking every opportunity to promote the philosophy and policies of the Stamford American International School

• Taking responsibility for the class teacher during times of emergency

• Supervising the children at break/lunch and other unstructured times

• Assisting with the children’s safe use of school transport arrangements

• Ensuring that the children are always safe and secure at all time

General:

To provide any other reasonable duties delegated by the School Management

Position Requirements

• Ability to work under pressure and use of initiative is essential.

• Possess highly developed interpersonal and teamwork skill.

• Excellent verbal and written English skills.

• Possess technical skills in Google Suite and Microsoft Office.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of experience in working with children or relevant educational certificate/diploma required

• Experience working with English language learners in an academic setting
