Project Title: Sustainable catalysts for the synthesis of carbon-heteroatom bonds

Project Introduction:

Transition-metal catalyzed carbon-heteroatom strategies for the generation of selective carbon-nitrogen, carbon-sulfur and carbon-oxygen bonds has emerged as a versatile strategy for chemical synthesis. In particular, the intense demand for these strategies has been driven by its applications in producing key intermediates which are prevalent building blocks for the construction of many natural products and pharmaceuticals. Many of the existing protocols for performing this type of transformation have been accomplished using toxic and expensive transition metals such as palladium, nickel, rhodium and ruthenium metal catalysts. In most instances, the catalysts are easily rendered ineffective unless carried out under stringent inert conditions and anhydrous solvents. Generally, the catalytic systems based on such transition metals are perceived as expensive methodologies with higher toxicity.

Despite advances made in carbon-heteroatom bonds formation reactions, there is still a pertinent need to develop new protocols that are less toxic, sustainable, and experimentally simple. In this project, we aim to address this challenge by applying more environmentally benign metal salts as catalysts for carbon-heteroatom bonds formation reactions.

Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field is required.
• Candidate must have at least one year of experience working in a chemistry lab.
• Experience in the synthesis and characterization of organic compounds is necessary.

Project Title: Embodiment and Social-Emotional Learning: A Comparative Study of Immersive Virtual Environments and Drama Processes.

Project Introduction: This project is a comparative study of 360˚ immersive virtual environments (IVEs) and drama processes for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in the Citizenship and Character Education (CCE) classroom. Both IVEs, facilitated by Virtual Reality (VR) devices involving head-mounted displays (HMDs), and drama processes, such as role-playing or dramatizing, are embodied experiences which allow one to be another or be ‘in the shoes’ of another and assume his/her perspective. They thus lend to a necessary comparison as potential ways of effective SEL teaching in the CCE context. Specifically, the project seeks to measure the effectiveness of both modalities in encouraging students to take another’s perspective, empathize (aspects of the Social Awareness competency in MOE’s SEL framework (2016)) and, in turn, how this affects responsible decision-making, another competency in the framework. This will be done as a problem-based scenario fashioned to the respective modality (IVE or drama), with opportunities for students to provide solutions to the problem encountered.

The project will be a small-scale, comparative quasi-experiment. The team will collaborate with Xinmin Secondary School to facilitate two CCE lessons as experimental sessions where quantitative and qualitative data will be obtained. Three classes from the Secondary 3 cohort will be selected by the school: one will experience the problem-scenario as IVE, the other will experience it as facilitated drama processes; the third will have students undergo a CCE lesson, taught with current conventional approaches, albeit of a similar topic and focus as the other two treatment groups.

There will be two rounds of data collection for which the processes are identical although a different scenario will be presented each time. A pre- and post-test survey will be given to all students and the self-reporting measures will be presented as a Likert-scale questionnaire as well as open-ended short questions. Students’ written solutions to the problems would also be coded for qualitative data. Subsequently, interviews will also be done with selected individuals based on the quantitative and qualitative data evaluated; the interviews desire to investigate, in greater depth, the impact of IVEs on their solution and their empathic and perspective-taking responses.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop prototype applications of AI in courses that can be easily adapted for courses
• Develop the workflow for the incorporation of new education technology into courses

Job Requirements:

• PhD from a recognized university

GOAL OF THE POSITION

This role is to ensure we translate our customers' instructions into PTS's work instructions - to best coordinate schedule between Workshop and the respective Test Departments.

RESULT AREAS/CORE ACTIVITIES

Operational & Leadership tasks:

1. Ensure client instructions were properly documented and communicated downstream

• Interpret customer's documents
• Ensure Customers' instructions align with the work scope stated our Quotation
• Cross-reference customer's instructions with reference specification(s)
• Ensure proper markings of Samples for machining/cutting
• Comprehensive and accurate input in DWO

2. Ensure there is clear internal communication pertaining to the job, including:

• Check for all internal (e.g., quotation) and external (e.g., mill certificate) documents
• Ensure they are uploaded to our Document Management System
• Ensure instant update of the documents whenever there are changes
• Ensure instant communication of any changes to downstream personnel

3. Oversee the scheduling and coordination of the test jobs with Workshop and Testing Department(s), including:

• Ensure there is prioritization of jobs
• Ensure anticipation of longer lead time for jobs that require special preparation works for specimens or fixtures

4. Engage customers with the aim to build & maintain strong relationship with customers, including:

• Understand customers' testing objectives;
• Attend to Customers' enquires and to provide professional technical advice
• Advise Customers on potential problems they might face
• Gives advice to Customers on minimum sample requirement
• Advise customers on applicable codes and specifications and associated tests and test methods
• Advise customers on required turnaround time and test schedule

5. Work with Draftsman to draw up sample plans to advise customers and instruct workshop on cutting/machining

• Write and review department SOPs and work processes

Learning & Development Tasks:

• Attend cross training in the respective Test Departments & Workshop
• Conduct training to the juniors as well as Employees from Workshop
• Establish Training syllabus and Training materials

FORMAL PREREQUISITES FOR THE POSITION

• Master of Science or Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering / Material Science; or
• Bachelor of Science or Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering or Material Science

Technical Skills:

• At least 4 years in an ISO 9001 Manufacturing or QAQC role or equivalent; or
• 4 years of experience working under an ISO 17025:2017 based Quality Management System (QMS)
• Strong knowledge in common metallic materials and alloy specifications and chemical composition, especially in steels, stainless steels, nickel alloys, cobalt alloys, aluminium alloys, titanium alloys.
• Good knowledge on metallic material properties and their industrial purposes
• Good knowledge of welding consumables and processes and their applications
• Good Understanding of measurement uncertainty and factors contributing to it
