Job Description

We are looking for talented and dynamic Computational Biologists/Bioinformaticians/Data Analysts to work with a multidisciplinary group of scientists on the discovery of new targets for therapy in Diabetic Nephropathy (DN), a devastating complication of diabetes causing significant morbidity, mortality and human suffering. In Singapore, the incidence of DN as a cause of end-stage kidney disease is among the highest in the world. The job will be part of the NMRC-funded project called Diabetes Study in Nephropathy and other Microvascular Complications II that is coordinated by Duke-NUS Medical School, and will be based in within the Centre for Computational Biology (CCB) of Duke-NUS. The multi-omics data for the project have been already generated and are ready for analysis. The job is available immediately, and it will be for a period of 3 years, with possible extension depending on performance and funding availability.

The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities within the overall scope of the DYNAMO II research project under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his/her designate, including but not limited to the following: -

• Independently carry out the design and execution of experimental research required by the research component of the project.
• Perform analysis of complex and large-scale genomics data, including (but not limited to) WGS and transcriptomic data (including single cell sequencing data).
• Use computational tools and algorithms written in one/all R, PERL and Python.

THE POSITION

Title:

Data Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Visualization Specialist to join our team. As a Data Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of the company's data architecture, databases, and data processing systems. Your responsibilities will include designing, constructing, installing, and maintaining efficient data systems, ensuring optimal performance, availability, and security.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain robust data pipelines to support the collection (web scraping), processing, and storage of large datasets.
• Implement and manage CI/CD pipelines using tools like GitHub Actions to automate build, test, and deployment processes.
• Containerize applications using Docker for efficient deployment and scalability.
• Orchestrate containerized applications using Kubernetes to ensure reliability, scalability, and high availability.
• Design, deploy, and manage message queuing systems (e.g., RabbitMQ) for asynchronous communication between microservices.
• Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code in Python to implement data processing algorithms and services.
• Work closely with data scientists and analysts to understand data requirements and implement solutions to meet business needs.
• Collaborate with DevOps engineers to optimize infrastructure and ensure seamless integration of data engineering solutions.
• Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement optimizations to ensure efficient data processing and storage.

Requirements:

· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

· 2 to 3 years of experience as a Data Engineer or similar role.

· Strong proficiency in GitHub Actions, CI/CD pipelines, Docker, Kubernetes, and message queuing systems (e.g., RabbitMQ).

· Advanced programming skills in Python, with experience in data processing libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy).

· Experience with cloud platforms, preferably Azure, but familiarity with any other cloud provider (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud) is acceptable.

· Ability to work independently and proactively, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

· Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to learn new technologies quickly.

· Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

The Energy and the Environment Division has a vacancy for a researcher in the fields of energy systems modelling and analysis, environmental sciences or other related quantitative research fields. The researcher will support ongoing research projects of the division.

Job Scope

• Develop strong modelling research that contribute to project deliverables.
• Contribute to project presentations and reports, and publish articles in reputable academic journals.
• Carry out administrative tasks, including the organising of seminars and workshops, management of student interns, and other tasks assigned by the Division Head and PI.

Requirements

• Possess a PhD degree in the fields of energy and climate economics, energy systems modelling, operations research, management science, or other related quantitative research fields.
• A good understanding and interest in energy, climate change and related policy issues, such as energy supply and demand, regional power grids, energy and the environment, climate change and the Paris Agreement.
• Relevant research experience using climate change / energy modelling tools, such as the Integrated Assessment Model, and power dispatch model, optimization approach, etc. A good knowledge of programming language (e.g., Python) would be an advantage.
• A solid knowledge of optimization methodologies would be highly valuable.
• Relevant working and practical experience in industry or government agencies in the area of energy and environment would be highly valuable.
• Relevant research experience on the ASEAN region would be an advantage.
• Published in reputable energy, environmental and/or systems modelling related journals.
• Has a strong written and oral command of the English language.
• Able to work independently and as part of a team.
