Prof Mary Chan-Park and her team have recently won a highly competitive large grant on the design, synthesis and studies of the improved RNA delivery vehicles.

Prof Mary Chan-Park is currently the Centre Director of the Centre for RNA Delivery Therapeutics. She is also the current President Chair Professor of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (2024 onwards) and the 2019 Board of Trustees Chaired Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (2019-2024), both at the Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU Singapore). She also holds a joint appointment at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at NTU. She is the Director of the Centre for Antimicrobial Bioengineering and the Director of the NTU Laboratory for RNA Delivery Therapeutics. She is a Fellow of the America Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.

The Research Fellow will take on a significant role to develop stimuli-responsive nanoparticle formulations. New alternative delivery vehicles for the promising RNA nanomedicine are urgently needed to replace the current ones to achieve great delivery efficacy with less side effects. We have shown that some polymeric or lipid nanoparticles are excellent candidates as delivery agents.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop new stimuli-responsive lipid or polymer formulations for RNA nanomedicine to achieve efficient transfection efficiency and endosomal escape.
• Design and synthesize novel cationic or ionizable lipids or polymers for RNA delivery.
• Formulate lipids/polymers with RNA to create delivery systems.
• Measure and evaluate transfection efficiency, endosomal escape efficiency, and other particle properties

Job Requirements:

• PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Materials Science, or related field
• At least 5 years of relevant experience in stimuli-responsive nanoparticle delivery formulations and evaluation.
• Familiarity with RNA delivery formulations (e.g., LNPs) and their evaluation.
• Proficiency in RNA formulation and RNA evaluation techniques.
• Experience with mice studies and bioimaging (e.g., confocal, FRET, FRAP).
• Strong background in lipid or polymer synthesis.

Project Title: Sn-based alloy-carbon nanoassemblies for sodium-ion batteries using plasma-based sustainable technologies (RI 7/22 RSR )

Project Introduction: Sustainability of lithium-ion batteries in long run, as major energy storage system, is not possible due to limited resource of lithium and increasing cost. Hence, focus on sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) is increasing as sodium is abundantly available at much lower cost. The biggest challenge for SIBs is to find suitable anode material with appropriate sodium voltage storage, large reversible capacity, and high structural stability. Moreover, the synthesis process of anode material needs to be cost, time and energy efficient. It is hypothesized: (i) Carbon (GraphiticCarbon/Graphene/GrapheneQuantumDots = GC/G/GQD) encapsulated nanostructured-tin (ns-Sn), i.e. GC/G/GQD@ns-Sn, as anode in SIBs will accommodate volume change, prevent formation of excessively thick SEI layer, and avoid pulverization leading to enhanced capacity, capacity retention and stability. (ii) Plasma based strategy, as against wet chemical approach, can provide sustainable environmentally friendly synthesis of GC/G/GQD@ns-Sn with better energy-, time- and cost- efficiency. Specific aims are: (i) to develop and optimize the plasma based sustainable synthesis of integrated hybrid 3D GC/G/GQD@ns-Sn anode in core-shell configuration, and (ii) to develop and test industry relevant SIB prototype using the most optimized carbon-Sn combination and bench mark its capacity, efficiency, cycling and stability. Synthesis of ns-Sn onto suitable 3D foam substrate using plasmas will be achieved first. Afterwards, GC/G/GQD will be encapsulated onto ns-Sn using plasma strategy to form GC/G/GQD@ns-Sn. Structural, compositional, morphological properties of electrode material along with their detailed electrochemical characterization and performance analysis will be conducted to achieve best battery performance.

The Research Fellow hired for this project at NIE will work on synthesis and optimization of GC/G/GQDs@ns-Sn as anode electrode material using plasma based dry process. He/she will also be responsible for the characterization (SEM, EDX, XRD, RAMAN, TEM, XPS etc) and performance evaluation (using battery tester and electrochemical workstation) of the anode electrode material.

• Conduct research and development activities on polymer pre-treatment and mechanical/chemical upcycling, including formulation of problem statement, design and execution of lab-scale and pilot-scale experiments/operations, sample characterizations, data analysis, and so on.
• Engage and communicate with existing or future industrial and academic collaborators to advance the developed technologies from lab-scale verification to pilot implementation.
• Prepare technical reports, intellectual properties documents, safety documents, and academic publications

Job Requirements:

• PhD degree in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or fields related to polyurethane.
• At least 6-8 years graduate study or working experience in research and development on topics on polymer science, chemical engineering, and green technologies
• Proficiency in hands-on and characterization techniques such as TGA, DSC, FTIR, DMA, rheology, NMR, CHNS, XRD, XPS, engineering design and drawing etc.
• Able to exhibit leadership roles in handling and managing multi-disciplinary projects
• Experienced in preparation of academic and pilot-operation proposals
• Good team-player, good communication skill, problem solver, thinker and doer
• Good wet laboratory practice and familiar with considerations on laboratory safety
• Passionate in research and solving real-time environmental issues related to plastic upcycling
• Software skills relevant to process design, mass balance, cost analysis, and life-cycle-analysis are favorable
• Industrial experience in polymer upcycling and productization is favorable
