The National University of Singapore invites applications for a Senior Research Fellow position in Prof Brian Kennedy’s lab, part of the Department of Biochemistry and the Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Purpose of the post

The Senior Research Fellow (SRF) will be responsible to and work closely with Professor Brian Kennedy to provide support in research projects to advance the understanding of aging biology and age-related diseases, with a specific focus on identifying novel anti-aging compounds (drugs, natural products, metabolites, etc.) that can delay cellular aging and extend healthspan. This project will focus on the multi-agent search problem, where multiple autonomous robots (agents) are tasked with spreading over a given region to be explored, to locate given targets of interest trying to evade detection. The number of targets is unknown, and their initial position is not known as well. There might be obstacles in the domain, and their location might or might not be known. Throughout this work, we will assume that robots can communicate their observations (presence/absence of targets) during search, via local or global communications, so they can update their representation of the domain and likely location(s) of targets (more details about this representation in the next Section). Our goal is to allow robots to plan efficient search paths to cover the domain and localise the targets as quickly as possible, while relying on local sensing and on distributed intelligence rather than on centralised planning, which would represent a vulnerable bottleneck and would not scale well to large agent teams.

Project Overview

We are seeking one or more Postdoctoral Associates, Research Engineers, or Research Scientists in social sciences or related fields to join a project on “Designing human-AI teams.” The project is part of a five-year research program on "Mens, Manus and Machina—How AI Empowers People, Institutions and Cities in Singapore (M3S)."

Successful applicants for this position will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge, interdisciplinary projects that aim to dramatically rethink how people and AI systems will work together in the future. To do this, the project seeks to build a strong scientific foundation for how AI can augment (as opposed to replace) humans.

One important goal of the project is to develop a rich taxonomy of activities that can be performed by human-AI teams. Like mapping the plants and animals on an unexplored continent, the work will involve cataloging many (a) activities and (b) possible human-computer processes for performing these activities.

To do this, we will develop knowledge bases that include (1) descriptions of many different types of activities and processes, and (2) classifications of these descriptions into taxonomies that range from very general types of activities to very specific ones.

Then, using these knowledge bases, we will develop AI tools to automatically generate promising ways of combining humans and AI systems to perform different tasks. In the long run, we believe these tools will help rapidly (a) identify use cases for new AI capabilities, (b) specify effective processes and task allocations to humans and computers in a given situation, and (c) identify innovative ways to combine people and AI to solve business and societal problems.

The T6 team is led by distinguished scholars, including Profs. Thomas Malone, Daniela Rus, and Abdullah Almaatouq from MIT; and Profs. Marcelo Ang and Bryan Low from the National University of Singapore; and will be assisted by Prof. Archan Misra from Singapore Management University.

Purpose of the post

The Visiting Senior Research Fellow (RF) will be responsible to, and work closely with, the Principal Investigator and study team members to ensure the successful completion of the experiments on time. The RF’s principal role will be to work in general practices such as planning and conducting experiments, data collection, data entry and analysis.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Senior Research Fellow will liaise with the relevant personnel in the Department and Immunology programme to effectively conduct the project and will be accountable to the Principle Investigator (PI). The RF will be able to:

1. Oversee the general management of the project;
2. Provide administrative and secretarial support to the project, such as organizing regular meetings to maintain regular communication with other members of the research team and collaborate with the study sites;
3. Undertake the day to day running of the project, e.g. Collaborate with team members at the study sites, recruitment, data collection at hospitals/participants’ homes;
4. Conduct literature searches, and analyse data, as well as assist in preparing both progress and final reports of the project;
5. Maintain the highest standard of professional conduct in accordance with policies and procedures;
6. Assist with any other duties of a similar nature that are delegated by the PI.

Qualifications

1. have a Ph.D. degree with good results in the field of biomedicine with prior experience in research being essential; and

DesCartes Program is looking for one RF position in Optimization-driven hybrid AI

ABOUT DESCARTES

The DesCartes programme is developing a hybrid AI, combining Learning, Knowledge and Reasoning, which has good properties (need for less resources and data, security, robustness, fairness, respect for privacy, ethics), and demonstrated on industrial applications of the smart city (digital energy, monitoring of structures, air traffic control).

The program brings together 80 permanent researchers (half from France, half from Singapore), with the support of large industrial groups (Thales SG, EDF SG, ESI group, CETIM Matcor, ARIA etc.).

The research will take place mainly in Singapore, at the premises of CNRS@CREATE, with a competitive salary and generous funding for missions.

WP3 aims at

supporting the whole Descartes program in order to develop advanced optimization-based solutions in the context of hybrid AI. Any AI system or machine learning algorithm ultimately involves a formulation with an objective or loss function to be minimized. The modelling of the problem as well as the chosen objective function optimization algorithm is crucial to the success of the overall AI task. This is all the more crucial in the context of hybrid AI, which seeks to integrate physics-inspired models with machine learning algorithms. We will address this problem from two complementary angles, namely optimization-based methods and machine learning-based methods.

The Research Fellow (RF) is expected to contribute to the design and engineering of hybrid twin-based simulation and control architectures for urban critical systems using optimization-based techniques. Finally, the RF will contribute to the use cases of Descartes.
