We are looking for a motivated bioinformatics specialist who is keen on studying how microbes contribute to common skin diseases such as eczema and acne. Our lab is focused on leveraging new technologies to better study microbial populations and their impact on human health. We have extensive experience in metagenomic analysis in clinically or commercially important contexts such as uncovering distinct microbial communities in households affected by paediatric eczema (PMID: 35318044) and revealing the microbial basis of body odour in teenagers (PMID: 30497517). We are now focusing on applying various -omics capabilities to larger sized disease cohorts to understand how microbial pathways and biomarkers change with disease progression and treatment. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment, with unique access to next-generation sequencing technologies and a wide range of samples. The Research Fellow (RF) will design studies and conduct research testing the efficacy of a newly-developed music-based Brain Computer Interface (BCI) for emotion regulation in listeners. She/he will work in a multi-disciplinary team to 1) conduct R&D of our automatic music generation systems for affective music generation, and 2) help test the efficacy of a music generation system paired with a BCI for emotion regulation in healthy as well as neurological and/or mental health patients. The RF will design and conduct experimental research and user studies, help coordinate research activities, and perform data analyses. The RF will need to be capable of working both independently and in a team, of developing innovative solutions, and of publishing research findings in high-impact conferences and journals. This position is part of an exciting large-scale (multi-research team) project that aims to create a holistic BCI solution for the restoration and enhancement of brain functions.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop user studies and experiment interfaces to test the efficacy of an affective music generation system paired with a BCI.
• Explore solutions for music and BCI-driven therapy for mental health (depression, anxiety).
• Conduct pilot trials of an EEG-based musical BCI

We are a team headed by Dr Matias I Autio, Senior Research Fellow in the laboratory of Prof Roger Foo.

We are embarking on a project to establish genome-engineered packaging cell lines for production of lentiviral gene therapy vectors. The project is closely linked with industrial partners and the aim is develop technology with eventual commercial deployment.

We are looking for a Research Associate to drive the wet lab research activities for the duration of the project.

Responsibilities:

• Clone and amplify complex constructs necessary for engineering of mammalian cells
• Maintain cultures of mammalian cells to a high standard and conduct engineering experiments working closely with the project leads
• Compile and organise experimental data, including cell culture records, characterization results, and cell line inventory information
• Conduct daily wet-lab experiments e.g. nucleic acid extraction and quantification
• Assist the team to ensure a safe and efficient working environment
• Ensure project deliverables are met in a timely manner and to the highest standard

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related discipline.
