ADVANCE-ID is jointly funded by the Wellcome Trust and Singapore institutions including the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. The vision of the Network is to improve public health by developing the clinical evidence base for the prevention and treatment of drug-resistant infections. The Network aims to improve and strengthen clinical research capabilities in the region by acting as a platform to develop good principles and practices. Introduction

In collaboration with the Woodlands Health (WH) and the National Health Group (NHG), the Rehabilitation Research Institute of Singapore (RRIS), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and SingHealth, SEC is undertaking a research programme on "Built Environment and physical activity in Falls and Arthritis study (BE-FIT)". It addresses imminent health challenge on moving away from “sickcare” and pivoting towards preventive healthcare as part of the nationwide effort on Healthier SG. Within BE-FIT we envision motivating vulnerable older adults to engage in healthy behavior by providing recommendations on improving accessibility (as well as preception thereof), in urban environment for uptake of physical activity. A deeper understanding of the interactions and interplay between BE and the high burden of falls and OA as proposed within the BE-FIT is crucial towards informing data-driven decisions on urban design and how the mobility-impaired elderly interact with their physical environment.

Project background

Falls result in severe physical as well as psychological impact among older adults. Beyond physical implications on injury-related trauma and in severe cases death, the psychosocial impact of falling can also be excruciating. Fear of falling can result in vicious cycles of decreased activity as well social isolation. These in turn lead to lower muscle strength and higher risk of future falls. In a similar manner, osteo-arthritis (OA) can lead to fear of movement (kinesiophobia) resulting in reduction of physical activity levels.

Within Work package 3 (WP3) of the BE-FIT study, we investigate movement patterns and features of walking outdoors and in the neighbourhoods among vulnerable older adults (suffering from OA as well as at high risk of falling). We will acquire these movement patterns and features using the state-of-the-art inertial measurement units (wearables such as ZurichMOVE or Axivity) sensors. These sensors are equipped with triaxial accelerometers and gyrospcopes and provide assessment of aspects such as impact and swing behaviour during different movements. Specifically, we will be addressing the following research questions:

• Design, implement, and test the measurement protocol on long term monitoring using the state-of-the-art inertial measurement unit sensors.
• Assist project management for BE-FIT research activities at SEC including project planning activities, effort estimates, and on-site and remote exchange with several research partners, especially at the CNRS, RRIS and WH.

The Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKYCIC), established in 2012, is a research centre at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. LKYCIC aims to stimulate research on cities and urbanisation, and explore the role of technology, design and policy in providing urban solutions.

Within the Programme on Urban Innovation, we are seeking a full-time Research Assistant to contribute to the study of placekeeping, which involves the long-term management and maintenance of place. With a mixed-methods research approach, we will examine who the key stakeholders are in placekeeping, how they collaborate, and what facilitates or hinders their collaboration. The study aims to establish a methodology and framework that will enable the systematic investigation of placekeeping and inform future policies and practices related to placekeeping in Singapore.

About the Position:

The research agenda of the sabbatical will address two to three aspects of flapping-flight MAVs inspired by bats, in particular its (i) aerodynamics, (ii) robotic replication, and - if time permits - its acoustic characteristics. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to develop a first-of-its kind AI-assisted integrated NDT verification system for reusability of structural steel with accuracy of ±10% at confidence level of 95%. The key innovation is to use AI to analyse a bigger data set and build a multi-parameter machine learning (ML) model that integrate the complex mechanical properties obtained from DT and the electric/magnetic permeability data obtained from NDT to predict the critical material characteristics of reusable steels.

• Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met.
• Undertake these responsibilities in the project:
  1. Establishing test result database: Conducting both DTs and NDTs on the same samples to create a comprehensive dataset for AI model development, managing data collection processes on-site at the collaborator’s factory, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the collected data.
  2. Developing statistical model: Utilizing DT results to develop statistical models for estimating mechanical characteristics based on normal distribution and analyzing statistical data to support model development.

Developing and verifying the AI model: Developing various regression models and evaluate their feasibility and suitability, conducting model fitting and verification phases using training and test datasets and ensuring the selected model meets the accuracy criteria (±10% at 95% confidence) for individual mechanical characteristics and overall classification results (grade determination).
  4. Validation of the method: Implementing the proposed method and AI model in test bedding cases, measuring the impact of the method in terms of time and cost savings and developing implementation guidelines based on validation results.
• Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations.
• Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers.
• Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
