Purpose of the post

Who are we looking for?

The Chief of Staff works as part of the CARES leadership team (with the CARES Director) to ensure the smooth running of the University of Cambridge's research centre in Singapore. The post holder has operational responsibility for all day-to- day non-academic activities of the centre, including research grant pre- and post award activities, people management, financial management, and establishing and maintaining partnerships with funders and collaborating institutions. We are looking for a highly motivated and talented individual with a passion in cancer genomics, biology, and radiation research to join the Tan Chin Tuan Laboratory of Optical Imaging, Photodynamic, and Proton Therapy - Precision Radiation Oncology Programme (PROP). The scope of the projects conducted under the premise of PROP includes 1) early- and late-phase clinical trials; 2) cancer genomics and data science; and 3) translational cancer and radiation biology. For this role, you will be mainly working with the Principal Investigator (PI) and the research teams under Theme 2. The projects involve studying cancer genomics of two main cancers, nasopharyngeal and prostate cancer, and the mechanistic pathways involved or identification of novel biomarkers for radioresistance. Samples from consented patients will be used for next-generation sequencing and/or microarray to generate “big data” for further analysis by our data scientists. You will be involved in inter-departmental collaborations with oncologists, pathologists, scientists, and local and international collaborators.

- Identify and study the mechanistic pathways involved in radioresistant cancers.

The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Fellow on a 4 years contract at the Natural Sciences and Science Education Academic Group.

Project Title: Fusion Science for Clean Energy: Gamma-ray Spectroscopy diagnostic for WEST

Project Introduction: As part of our Fusion Science for Clean Energy programme, we have two openings for Research Fellow, to undertake experimental research on Runaway Electron (RE) beams in the WEST tokamak and in a dense plasma focus device using high-rate gamma-ray spectroscopy. RE beams typically occur during tokamak plasma disruptions and in pinched plasma disruptions in dense plasma focus devices. Bremsstrahlung scattering of these energetic electrons orbiting within the machine produce gamma-rays (of energy up to ~20 MeV) – making Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy (GRS) one of the most essential diagnostics for experimental studies of RE beams. Because they can have a large amount of energy, RE beams represent a serious risk of damage to the tokamak. Moreover, this risk increases as the size of machine increases. Consequently, research on RE beams is becoming increasingly important as the size of tokamaks will likely continue to increase over the coming decades. The GRS diagnostic measurements planned for WEST are aimed at understanding and minimizing the damage risk posed by RE beams. GRS diagnostics will be developed and tested initially in Singapore on a dense plasma focus device which also produces gamma-rays due to plasma instabilities.

• A PhD in Physics or Engineering with a strong background in pulsed power systems, and/or plasma/x-ray/gamma-ray diagnostics.
