Primary responsibilities

• Conduct concurrent in vivo pharmacology studies according to the experimental design.

Research overview

Fluorescent labels are essential tools in many branches of life science research. They provide high sensitivity for detection and are non-destructive to the target samples. Traditionally, fluorescent labeling is achieved by adding a chromophore to biomolecules such as proteins or nucleic acids. Conjugated oligoelectrolytes (COEs) are emerging as a new class of fluorescent molecules used to label cells and other specimens for non-invasive fluorescence imaging directly.

COEs are defined by a linear hydrophobic conjugated backbone with polar ionic pendants at both terminals. They were firstly synthesized in Prof. Bazan’s group as two-photo absorption chromophores and later found to have biological applications. COEs are membrane intercalating molecules that span the lipid bilayer. The spontaneous intercalation into membranes from aqueous media results in significant increases in fluorescence emission. By tuning the molecular framework in the conjugated core of COE, COEs characterized by different emission wavelengths can be achieved, thereby gaining access to a range of different colours for fluorescent labelling.

About the Company and the role

Acoerela Pte. Ltd. is a spin off from NUS that is commercializing COEs for use as dyes in life science. This role aims to determine the labelling efficiency of various COE dyes across different biological samples, including but not limited to mammalian cells, bacteria of different membrane structures, and extracellular vesicles. The characterization and applications for these COE-labelled samples will also be investigated via different fluorescence-based techniques such as confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and in vivo fluorescent imaging. The Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at Nanyang Technological University is an interdisciplinary School that aims to be a world leader in environmental research focusing on environmental challenges in Asia. The research laboratory on Resilient and Inclusive cities at ASE addresses important challenges related to rapid urbanization and climate change in Asia-Pacific. It focuses on understanding and modelling the benefits of nature-based solutions – e.g. urban parks or peri-urban forests, road trees, green roofs – in the region to inform policy and practice, and create more resilient and inclusive cities. The research uses an interdisciplinary lens, combining geospatial modeling of urban environments and empirical studies of urban practice.

The laboratory is currently looking for a Research Assistant or Research Associate to support the assessment of climate and biodiversity urban plans of Southeast Asian cities and other lab projects.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the collection and analysis of climate and biodiversity urban plans in a subset of Southeast Asian cities
• Support other lab projects through literature review, data processing, and other analyses

Job Requirements:

• Minimally Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape & Urban planning, Environmental Sciences or equivalent

Applications are invited for the following full-time position in the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health:

Research Fellow

We are looking for research fellows with a quantitative background for ongoing research in Public Health.

They will be working within the team under the Principal Investigator Assistant Professor Borame Dickens alongside multiple collaborators and experts.

Methods include agent based/individual based modelling, SEIR modelling, geospatial statistics, Bayesian statistics, burden mapping, measuring the impact of the environment on disease among others. The PI has projects in both infectious and chronic disease, measuring the impact of interventions.

Candidates need to be able to understand statistical modelling, have a mathematical background, and be fluent in R programming. We will also consider candidates who have extensive C++ or Python coding knowledge as these are transferrable to R.

The candidate will be working with the Principal Investigator(s) on the analysis of national health datasets, utilising an array of methods to infer statistical relationships and health outcomes. Further mathematical modelling will also be carried out when necessary involving diagnostic flows and where appropriate, disease spread and/or illness progression.

The Principal Investigator(s) is seeking for an independent worker who is well-organized, analytical and codes competently. They will however be receiving support from a team of mathematicians, epidemiologists and statisticians, and have a diverse portfolio of tasks. Under the team’s guidance, they will be expected to lead their own publications.
