The Aviation Innovation Research (AIR) Lab

The joint CAAS-Thales innovation lab known as ‘AIR Lab’ started to operate on 1st November 2019 with the objective to develop Proof of Concepts (POCs) or Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) of advanced and open technologies for future Air Traffic Management (ATM). Currently, the joint lab employs a team of 40 Thales engineers and 12 CAAS engineers and air traffic controllers operating in a vibrant ecosystem involving several Singaporean SMEs and start-ups, as well as key research institutes.

Essential Skills/Experience

• Working knowledge of designing and building software applications using Java and/or Kotlin as a main programming language; a bonus is if you have experience designing and deploying RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs

• Familiar with development and deployment technologies for cloud (e.g., Azure Cloud, AWS, GCP), Kubernetes and container workloads (e.g., Kaniko, Docker) in general.

• Proficient in designing and implementing data processing and business Logic

• Demonstrated application of working with Continuous Integration and/or Continuous Delivery models; you are expected to be familiar with using Linux (e.g., shell commands)

• Proficiency in distributed source code management tools like GitLab, Github and practice GitOps

Desirable Skills/Experience

• Experience in designing ETL or event-driven processing pipelines (with structured or unstructured data) using frameworks like Spark/ Apache Beam, Kafka Streams, Flink; proficient in deploying these data pipelines into Kubernetes cluster in Azure cloud either as virtual machines or containerized workloads.

• Familiar with cloud deployment models (e.g., public, private, community and hybrid) and service models (Software as a Service, Platform as a Service and Infrastructure as a Service).

• Familiar with designing and/or implementing AI/MLOps pipelines in public cloud (e.g., Azure, AWS, GCP)

Your responsibilities include:

• Conceptualise engineering design and execute the project with the detailed designs.
• Oversee project management including overall responsibility over resources, time allocation, cost and quality of project deliverables.
• Manage and engage client/consultant/contractors and local authorities to drive project execution, resolve issues, submission to authorities and overall on-site construction supervision.

Responsible:

• Ensure the proper functioning of electrical systems on ships, including generators, motors, switchboards, and electrical distribution panels, by performing routine maintenance tasks.
• Quickly identify and diagnose electrical faults or malfunctions in onboard systems, including propulsion systems, power generation, and safety equipment, ensuring minimal downtime for the vessel.
• Oversee the installation of new electrical equipment and systems on vessels, ensuring compliance with marine safety standards and company protocols.
• Perform emergency and scheduled repairs to electrical systems, ensuring that all repairs meet industry safety and performance standards.
• Ensure that all electrical work adheres to safety standards, maritime regulations, and environmental laws. This includes ensuring compliance with SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) and MARPOL (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships) regulations.
• Monitor the operation of power generation equipment such as diesel generators and alternators to ensure they are running efficiently and meet the vessel’s power demands.
• Maintain and troubleshoot electronic control systems used in various marine applications, including engine control, ballast control, and navigation equipment.
• Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for electrical systems, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the equipment. This involves regular inspections, testing, and servicing.
• Provide guidance and training to junior engineers and vessel crew on the proper use, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electrical systems.
• Keep detailed records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and upgrades performed on electrical systems. Ensure that all electrical work is documented in compliance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.

Requirements:

• Min Diploma or equivilant; technical certification or associate degree in Marine Mechanics or related field.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in Marine service and repair.
• Strong mechanical attitude and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency with diagnostic tools and marine service equipment.
• Ability to lift heavy objects, work in various weather conditions, and perform physically demanding tasks.
