Assistant Editor, Brand Newsroom (SPH Content Lab)

Content Lab is the international-award-winning content marketing arm of SPH Media and Brand Newsroom is a specialised unit within Content Lab that creates commissioned content through a newsroom lens. In an era of dwindling attention spans and information overload, Brand Newsroom strives to seize attention with targeted native, cross-platform content that is credible, clear, and compelling. Brand Newsroom is looking for an exceptional talent to join our team as Assistant Editor. You will play a leadership role in creating engaging audience-centric content that is relevant and relatable, and resonates with the audiences of The Straits Times, The Business Times, and other SPH Media English platforms.

Working with a team of editors and an army of contributors, you must have the ability to manage all the moving parts needed to bring a content project to life. The job requires ideation, planning, project management, pitching, client management, and exceptional editing and writing skills.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with the team to craft and refine ideas for stories, content series, concepts, themes; creating multiformat content that’s relevant to the audiences of both Chinese and English news titles
• Project manage campaigns through their life cycles, editing and writing a range of stories, working with an internal team of editors and pool of freelancers
• Gate-keep with a keen awareness of political, financial, social and legal minefields
• Ensure content is produced to brief at highest quality; and evangelises use of in-house style guides
• Write, edit, proofread and improve content; optimising copy and headlines for digital and social media according to best SEO practices
• Craft effective and engaging social media copy
• Manage sales / client relationships and help educate them on Brand Newsroom’s journalistic approach to storytelling
• Manage deadlines and monitor budgets
• Build a high-quality pool of contributors
• Comply with media law and ethical guidelines

Who we are looking for

• Minimum 5 years of demonstrated excellence in content creation, including digital and social media platforms
• Newsroom experience is key
• Excellent writing and editing skills
• Excellent command of the English language. Fluency in a second language is a bonus
• A keen ability to think strategically

• Knowledge of SEO and social media best practices

About the Role

As an Assistant Business Editor, you will play a key role in shaping the Straits Times business coverage from the financial hub of Singapore to help audiences understand how these issues relate to their daily lives, jobs and the wider global business community. You will also identify business wire stories that are relevant to the Straits Times audience and to curate such content for the website and the newspaper. You will have an opportunity to contribute to the young audience initiative, HeadSTart, which focuses on delivering content on careers and personal finance through creative avenues including a newsletter, a video series, on social media platforms and at in-person events.

You will work closely with our team of business journalists to tell stories using a variety of formats - from breaking news to long-form interactive features - with a special focus on the economy, finance, investing, stock markets, companies and labour issues. You should be able to provide guidance on story angles, provide value-added analysis and be adept at visual presentation. You will plan and conceptualise ways of covering major news events as well as coordinate with the wider newsroom, such as other desks and audience teams, to achieve the above objectives.

Job Requirements:

• Degree from a recognised university, with at least 6 years of experience in journalism and/or related fields such as finance, manpower and business development.
• Prior experience in a managerial role and a familiarity with editing work will be a plus.
• Well-honed news sense and the ability to make quick, sound editorial decisions.
• Keen interest in local and international business news agenda.
• Ability to edit raw copy to make complex topics accessible to the general reader. This entails breaking down statistics, financial statements, as well as business and investing jargon.
• Work with minimal supervision and be a team player.
• Strong communication and people management skills.
• Willingness to work shifts and on weekends and public holidays when needed.

About the Role

We are seeking a talented, driven and digitally-savvy supervisor to join the ST Now desk, to guide a team of reporters in creating compelling content for both our digital and print platforms. The team handles breaking and trending news, both locally and globally.

The ideal candidate should have at least 8-10 years in journalism and experience in leading a group of reporters, including assigning and editing copy across a wide range of topics, story types and formats. A candidate with prior on-ground reporting experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Identify critical news developments and trending stories that are relevant to ST’s audience. You will quite often be required to make quick, sound editorial decisions
• Manage a team of reporters and edit their stories to ensure the content is accurate, engaging, comprehensive, of high quality and published in a timely manner
• Guide reporters in copytasting and curating foreign news for ST
• Coordinate with ST’s other sections on story development and evergreen content production
• Ensure that all content is optimised for SEO and social media

Key Requirements:

Job Requirements

- Minimum Diploma in filmmaking or mass communication

- At least 1 year relevant experience in the media industry and video production

- Organized in work and possess good time management skills

Job Role and Responsibilities:

As an Assistant Sports Editor, you will be required to work with the sports team to curate and manage content for online, the newspaper and social media.

The job requires you to work closely with the reporters on the team to conceptualise and shape stories (news, features, interactives) for the section.

You will also identify foreign wires stories for the sports section and pages, and work with a team of copytasters, designers and sub-editors to curate content for both online and the newspaper. This will include story packages and interactives on foreign and Singapore sports.

A keen interest and knowledge in sport, both local and foreign, is required and experience in the sports industry will be a plus. The successful candidate should have the ability to spot a good story and work with the team to deliver it to our readers/viewers via the different platforms.

The Straits Times is looking for an Assistant Newsletter Editor. The right person for the job is a team player, who is strong on content and also understands data well.

Responsibilities

• Supervise content, performance and growth of ST's various newsletters, and curate some of the titles
• Track the key performance metrics of these newsletters, shape and drive a strategy for their growth
• Lead cross-functional discussions and collaboration with other stakeholders such as Consumer Division and Marketing on subscribers-only newsletters, sponsored newsletters or newsletters that are part of bulk sales
• Suggest and supervise new experiments to grow the audience for these products, and to identify potential new titles
• Good understanding of audience segmentation analytics and come up with ways to apply them to daily work, and keep abreast of the best industry trends and practices
• Deliver in-depth reports on performance, audience growth, with proposals for implementable next steps
• You will be expected to use the CMS to set up, make changes and deploy newsletter titles on your own

Requirement

• Strong communication and collaboration skills as you will be liaising with various stakeholders on a range of areas from content to designing to analytics
• Keen interest in news and current affairs, and a good writing style
• Familiarity with Google Analytics is a big plus.
